Heather: Hi! I'm Heather and I'm 31 and we have a history of bipolar disorder in our family. What is SAM-e? Michael H. Allen: Heather SAM-e is a naturally occurring chemical that occurs in your body. It's available also as in over-the-counter nutritional and it's available by prescription in Europe. It's not approved for use in Bipolar Disorder in United States but it is being studied here and you can look up the study sites on the National Institute of Health web page. But there are a lot of other treatments that are available for Bipolar Depression and I'd recommend that you talk to a Bipolar specialist in your area before trying something that has been less well studied.
