This video bartending lesson is brought to you by American Bartender School, where in just one or two weeks you can be fully trained and ready to work as a professional bartender. What I’m going to show you now is a drink called a Mai Tai, very popular tropical drink, it’s got a lot of different flavors to it and it’s very interesting.
So, I’m going to show you now the way to make it. First of all we’re going to make it in a tall glass, but we could use a oversize rock glass if we wanted too. And the first thing I’m going to do is I’m going to fill up my glass with ice. And the recipe calls for one ounce of plain rum, half ounce of triple sec; and triple sec is a orange flavored like citrusy, it’ more of an orange peelish flavored juice in a lot of mixed drinks to add the sweetness and slightly orange peelish taste with.
We’re going to use half ounce of Amaretto; Amaretto is an almond-flavored liqueur, so if you don’t have Amaretto, if you have like almond liqueur, you could use that also. Our recipe calls for little dash of grenadine, and grenadine is a syrup non-alcoholic made from pomegranate, so it has kind of a berry flavor, but not too berry. And then our recipe calls for equal parts of orange juice and pineapple juice, so we’re just going to put it just like that.
Now, there’s two things that we can do at this point. We could just kind of leave it like this or we could go another step and we could shake it to mix all the flavors together. Now, a lot of times people like it just like this because it looks pretty and now we’re going to add one other thing to thing that’s really going to make it pop. We’re going to add dark rum; a dark rum is colored with molasses and it has a very pungent, strong rum aroma to it. So, it’s a little stronger alcoholicwise, but it just has much more aroma to it. Now we’re going to pour some of our black rum, or dark rum right on top, not too much, put a long straw, or a couple of long straws in there, put a cherry in there. And if we have some fresh pineapple we might put a little piece of fresh pineapple on it.
This is our Mai-Tai, great tasting drink, a lot of flavors, we got dark rum on top, we got our pineapple-orange juice, we got a little bit of grenadine syrup, we’ve got our fruit juices and we have our light rum and triple sec. Hey, couple of this, don’t drink and drive, powerful drinks but tasty. Enjoy it, Mai Tai. More video bartending lessons are on our website barschool.com.
