Hi, this is Mike Callahan, Dr. File Finder and welcome to your butterscotch.com tutorial on how to get notifications on your Mac with Growl.
Now, Growl has been available on the Mac for quite some time. It’s now also available under Windows. The Windows version isn’t quite as sophisticated as the Mac version is yet, so we’re going to show it to you on the Mac but I’ve got download links for both versions in the show notes. It installs on the Mac as a preference pane, so we’ll open up system preferences either by the icon on the tray or by clicking the Apple menu and selecting system preferences.
Here’s Growl right here, we’ll click on that. You seen under general, you can have Growl stirred at log in, show up as an icon in the menu bar. If you click on applications, you can see all the different applications that are using Growl to give notifications on the desktop. You can pick an item. You could say configure. You can look at its notification settings, its application settings, and you can go back to the list.
Under display options, you can pick a style, say smoke. You can say preview and it will show up here in the corner so you get an idea of what it looks like. You pick a different one, candybars, it’s kind of a blue, a different look. You could even pick things to SMS message your notifications, put them in iCal and so on. In addition, if you wanted to, you can get network notifications and have Growl listen for things coming in across your network.
So Growl provides you a great way to get notifications from just about any program on your Mac and on the PC. Just download—Sheri did a very nice segment on Growl in episode 35. Be sure to check that out and that’s all there is to it.
