Hi! I’m David Epstein, this is Growing Wisdom.
We are here in our vegetable garden and if you’re like me, you have a small vegetable garden or even if you grow in containers, you definitely want to make the most use of your space.
So, here is some Spinach and we’ve been using these all spring along. But the Spinach is getting ready to what we call bow or flower. And the flower means that the Spinach is not going to be as sweet. So, I want to take this out, harvest it, but I don’t want to leave that space blank. So what do you do? Well I’ve got radishes starting to come up on either side. And in the middle here, I’m going to plant some beans. As the beans grow, the radishes will be at that point done. Then this entire area can be made for bush beans.
We’re planting a snap bean. This is Johnny Selected Seeds variety. It’s going to take about 55 days before it comes up. You want to wait until the soil is really warmed up so I like to wait until early June here in Zone Six. Other areas you can plant earlier. Some areas you can even wait later at late June even early July.
So, very simple, I’m just going to take out my spinach. Then what I want to do is I just want to loosen the soil up a little bit and remove any weeds that you might have. These seeds like to be planted about an inch deep. So, we make our little row about an inch down and just drop the seeds in. I plant mine an inch apart and I’ll thin them to two inches apart after they come up. You could have inoculated these beans the same way you would do peas or you could just sprinkle a little bit of the inoculant right in the row. Cover it up and pack it down.
I like to use a little string right over the row until it germinates. That way I know not to step there. Once they’ve germinated like the radishes behind them, I can take the string away.
Succession planting in the vegetable garden, a very key part of utilizing all of that space that is so valuable whether you have a large garden or a small one. Come back every week for all of our tips, hints, and help here at Growing Wisdom.
