From New York, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates have pledged $375 million to fight what they have dubbed the global tobacco epidemic. The money will be invested in anti-smoking groups in developing countries such as China and India, with the hope of matching the success of smoking bans in countries like the U.S., Canada and Ireland. China, with about 350 million smokers sees about 1 million people die each year from causes related to tobacco.
From Boston, according to research in the journal Human Reproduction, soy products may lower sperm counts. In a study of nearly 100 men who attended a fertility clinic between 2000 and 2006 those that ate the highest amounts of soy products like tofu and soy milk had the lowest sperm concentrations. Soy food intake had an even greater impact on sperm counts if the subject was overweight or obese.
And finally, from Pittsburgh, Dr. Ronald Herberman, the director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute has warned his faculty and staff to limit their cellphone use due to a possible risk of cancer. While the warning is contrary to studies that have not found such a link, Herberman insists that early, unpublished data may suggest otherwise.
