Gmail. Google’s approach to email does a good job blocking junk mail and unwanted messages. But if you are interested in checking one out, how do you know if it is safe?
Let us see what this one is about. It is a message for a loan. The URL looks legitimate, but how can I know for sure?
Here is another one, this one is offering loans too but the URL looks a little strange. I cannot tell from these emails whether they are real or not. But there is a way to be more confident.
Web of Trust can warn me about risky websites even in Gmail. All I do is download the free add on. And this time, a Wot icon appears beside the URL. I clicked on it and it takes me to the WOT scorecard. Here, I can see the reputation rating of the site and in the comments area, I could see the information from some of WOT’s trusted sources. If I click on the link, the WOT warning screen comes up.
Looking again at the one with the strange URL, the WOT icon alerts me not to go there.
WOT also makes your Google search safer. The WOT icon appears beside the search results, and clicking it takes you to the security score card.
Use Web of Trust to surf safer with G-mail and google. It is a free download for Firefox and Internet Explorer. You will find it at www.mywot.com.
