Dave: Okay basic -- we're going to talk about some basic bunker concepts just to get the ball out of the bunker, very simple stuff again. You can kind of pan up and down the clubface and we'll get into that. But the number one thing to realize I think is that pretty much kind of taking just about a full swing for every bunker shot right now. Until you start to get it out consistently and what that's going to do, it's going to provide enough force, because really there is a whole lot of sand that you need to move to get the ball up because this is the only shot where you actually do not the hit the ball first. The only shot in golf and it's a sand shot. Let me ask you Mark, how far behind the ball do you need to hit? What have you heard?
Mark: At two inches, inch or two inches.
Dave: Yeah. Now how do you know that?
Mark: I heard somebody on golf channel or something say --
Dave: Someone said two inch and half, two inches, okay. That's about two inches. I don't think there is any right answer. But the answer is hit behind the ball somewhere, it could be an inch, it could be two, it could be three. A lot of it depends on how deep and fluffy the sand is. Usually you're going to be taking a lot more sand when it's deep and fluffy, so you got to plan a full swing there and you might just end up hitting a little more behind the ball.
If the sand is really thin and compact then it's going to be a much -- it's going to require less force. You're going to be taking a lot less sand. You probably won't hit three inches behind because you'll bounce off and into the ball. So, what really is the matter, the point is hit behind the ball somewhere and take a full swing. And that's going to get us pretty much out of the bunker.
Behind the ball, full swing. And that's out. Now you can see if you heard that I hit the ball first there. There was a little bit of click and that's sent it over the green and if you pan down right here I drew a line about 2-3 inches behind it and I drew a line about 2-3 inches at front which theoretically is what should have happen.
See where my divot started and that was my divot, pretty much hit the ball first. So let's try it again. So the reason we're drawing the line is the bottom of the swing is kind of under the ball in the bunker shots. So you want to enter it somewhere behind it and you want to come out probably about the same distance in front. That was a much cleaner shot. You can see it entered in at that back line, two, three inches doesn't matter, and it came out of the sand about the same distance at front. So, full swing, hit behind the ball a couple of inches and you're going to get it out.
