Icing to relieve gout pain and inflammation
Applying an ice pack to the effected joint can relieve pain and inflammation. However, the cold can also set off gout symptoms as it can encourage uric acid to crystallize. Place a crushed ice pack on the inflamed joint for around 10 minutes, but first place a tea towel or cloth on your skin so as not to ‘burn’ it. Reapply as needed. An alternative is to alternate the ice pack with a hot-towel compress.
