Ashkan Karbosfrooshan: When the time comes to pick a good bottle of wine, the decision usually boils down to new world or old world. Now, our French Italian and Spanish wines usually garner the outmost of respect from wine connoisseurs, Greek wine doesn’t always benefit from that luxury. My name is Ashkan Karbasfrooshan with watchmojo.com and today I have the luxury of chatting with Cavas Spiliadis’ George Spiliadis to talk about the perception of Greek wine, and how you'd like to change it. You’re president and founder of Cava Spiliadis told us a little about it.
George Spiliadis: Well Cava Spiliadis is a company that I decided to open in November and I found that there was a need of high-end Greek wines in the market for many reasons, no need to go into them. People think Greek wine is low quality, bad uzo or just a cheap wine, and that’s not the case. Producers have gone to schools in France in Bordeaux, have gathered the now how and the techniques, and they apply it in the local environment in Greece. Very favorable climatic conditions and soil conditions, and in the last 15 years, Greek wine has really evolved.
Ashkan Karbosfrooshan: Do you imply that the new sort of renaissance of Greek wine is going to have a French influence?
George Spiliadis: Some of them do have a French influence, more on the technical aspect of it. However, the climate is unique to Greece; the grapes are unique to Greece. Some of them do use international grape varieties, but there are certain Greek grapes that are unique to Greece, so applying those French techniques to the Greek grapes brings special result.
Ashkan Karbosfrooshan 1: Some of the personal professional objectives you set for Cava Spiliadis in the next few years?
George Spiliadis: The next few years, a personal objective would be to have these wines in non-Greek restaurants on their wine lists. I would say it 10 restaurants, non Greek that would have my wines, in a more technical aspect, my objective also would be to on a general listing at the SAQ and we take it from there.
Ashkan Karbosfrooshan 1: We wish you nothing but the best with Cava Spiliadis.
George Spiliadis: Thank you very much, pleasure.
