Bea Broda: Today we are going to get some quick tips on how to grow up beautiful problem free lawn curios come with me. Hi Kathy!
Kathy Russell: Hi Bea.
Bea Broda: Well you know a lovely well maintained lawn is great for family fun and it adds tremendously to the value of our property but I find that growing one every year is not so easy. Now Kathy you are an expert in the turf building field tell me what do you do with those patchy areas? My grass gets worn here and there.
Kathy Russell: It is really just two easy steps to have a healthy and weed free lawn. First you need to over see the high traffic area that is really just adding soil and seed to your existing grass and be sure to keep it moist. And second you need to put together a regular fertilizing routine it is as easy as that.
Bea Broda: Well I have done both of those things but with limited success.
Kathy Russell: Did you know that there is a smart grass now.
Bea Broda: Smart grass? Well how does it work?
Kathy Russell: Well smart grass works by the rhizomes and the rhizomes spreading under the earth. Most of the grass the seed is made up of 70% of Kentucky Blue 30% of perennial rye. The Kentucky blue will spread under the grass and repair itself, so that when you have more down spots or spots with high traffic or even pet damage it will continually repair it self.
Bea Broda: Kathy something I have always wondered are we doing anything damaging to the environment in striving for that big green lawn?
Kathy Russell: In fact grass just does the opposite. We are actually helping environment by having grass. The grass traps the dust and pollen it helps to cool the Earth. And it also helps to reduce any type of erosion.
Bea Broda: I am so glad to hear that. What can we do to make lawns even healthier?
Kathy Russell: It is really about fertilizing four times a year. Start in early April, second application in June, third application in August, and follow up with the winter care application. Type of product to use like this that has an all in one particle and has time release.
Bea Broda: Time release?
Kathy Russell: Yes, time release is where the nutrients such as the nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium overtime release nutrients back into the soil. That is keeping your grass green and yes it does work.
Bea Broda: A time-release fertilizer now that is smart too.
