David Lupberger: Hi! I am David Lupberger with servicemagic.com. In this video, we are going to talk about the health and comfort inside the house in a different paint sealers, and adhesives that can be used to increase the comfort of the house itself. I am here with Brandy LeMae of VaST Architecture and she is going to review a number of these paints and finishes that are all low VOC and we are going to talk about that means. Brandy, Good Morning.
Brandy LeMae: Good morning.
David Lupberger: Can you tell us a little bit more about these finishes and what makes them beneficial and basically help you?
Brandy LeMae: Yeah, absolutely. So, when we are building an energy-efficient tight house, we have a less air infiltration in the house. So, it's really important that when it gets to the paints, adhesives and sealants, we make sure that we are using low or no even that are yet VOC paints and sealants and adhesives.
David Lupberger: And VOC means?
Brandy LeMae: Volatile Organic Compounds, and there is a variety of compounds that make up that group but they can cause cancer and liver damage. So if they are -- if you breathe them in over a long period of time and children are especially susceptible, so we want to be really careful.
So again a store like Ellie's Home Store has, a lot of things to choose from when we are looking for safer products. So, they have a variety no VOC paints that can be tinted, many different colors and the tints here are also either no, or low VOC.
Another fun thing, that you could try if you want too, is a milk paint. This is actually made from milk solid and you just mix it with water. It's kind of an interesting way to go. It gives you a matte finish. Again, when we are talking about sealants, and adhesives and stains, again, look for low VOC products in that category. It's especially important for the people who are installing these things to that they are not breathing in these chemicals all the time.
David Lupberger: When you talk about low VOC paints, are they just as durable as traditional paints that they might find at some of the big box or paint stores?
Brandy LeMae: Absolutely, yeah. They are just as durable, they have great -- they provide great coverage and they are easy to work with.
David Lupberger: Okay.
Brandy LeMae: Absolutely. Yeah this is durable. Some other things if you don't want to do a paint, if you want to do something that has a little bit more of a warmer rustic type feel, is you could actually do a clay-based wall treatment, something that you try along. So it's made from clay, from the earth. There are different pigments, available so, you can mix up the colors and it just gives you a different kind of textural feel to a wall and again no VOC is there.
David Lupberger: Alright, Brandy. Thank you.
Brandy LeMae: Thank you.
