Female: You know, seeing the scale of these 380 foot turbines and all the solars, pretty amazing. But it was kind of a bomber hearing Rick say that all this technology only provides 60% of the power needed to operate this facility. It really speaks to the challenge of meeting our growing energy demand and the need for all of us to try to be very more efficient.
Male: Yeah! The greenest kilowatt is the one you never use.
Female: Okay.
Male: So a little later, we are going to tell you how you can get your power from this wind turbine as I speak with Paul Kopelman about the Clean Power Choice Program. But first, Connie is going to introduce you to a new friend who is near death experience arise to a truly unique new skin care product for this episodes, Ogoods.
Female: Welcome to another segment of Ogoods where we look at conscientious consumerism, next between the organic or otherwise sustainable. Products and ideas that makes you say oh good! Something we can all do in our everyday lives to help ourselves in the planet.
Today I am visiting with Shan, creator of the Shan Skin Health and Nutrition product line. She is going to talk with us too help us make more firm choices when it comes to selecting the everyday products we use on our skin.
So, can you tell me a little bit about why you started the business and why you felt the need really to create an all natural skin care line?
Shan: Well actually, I am an image consultant
Female: I can use that?
Shan: I think you are very good.
Female: I have never thought of that one day when I grow up I was going to be launching a skin care line. Actually, out of a very bad thing came a good thing. In essence, I have a pulmonary embolism that pretty much went through my system and caused me to have a stroke and a heart attack and it was really very scary, I have to say.
Female: Oh yes.
Shan: And I wanted to know why this happened and further researched into it led me to the conclusion that there were toxins in the personal care items that I actually was using everyday and that is when I found out that I accumulated these toxins in my body and it threw of a balance and that is what caused my health situation.
Female: They were actually able to isolate them?
Shan: Yes, they were and it was kind of scary that you think that you are being protected with products out of the market and you really are not. So I looked into it, wanted to know if there were products in the market that I could use that were organic and toxin free and there really were not many choices and I was really accustomed to my high end skin care and I did not really like --
Female: That is your business.
Shan: That is right, it is my business and I really did not like my doctors telling me, you know you cannot really use this things anymore so I decided to take it on and develop it myself.
Female: That is really motivated. That is fantastic.
Shan: I do not know about you but between body care and your skin care and your wrinkle cream and whatever else you are going to use, these things do accumulate in your system and if it gets pass a certain point, things start to happen to you that you might blame on maybe menopause or something else, things like skin rashes and egsima and rosesha. A lot of people think that these are just -- come with this.
Female: Subtle.
Shan: But there were three major things about the cosmetic industry that I was not aware of before. One of the main things, it said it is a $30 billion industry that is self regulated. There is no prescreening or pre-testing of products that companies come out with before they hit the market. The second thing that I found out were that there are toxins in there are carcinogens in these products which I never could have imagined. I never thought in my research I was going to find something out like that and the EPA has said these things are carcinogens and they are toxic but they are still allowed to be in most personal care items in very small amounts but those do add up.
Female: It is cumulative.
Shan: And in overtime this is what causes all the problems.
Female: Now, in CSA episode, we discussed the dirty dozen food items, there is 12 foods that you should always try to get in the organic form as opposed to be conventional due to the high chemical and pesticide content. But did you know there was a dirty dozen in skin care also.
Shan: The dirty dozen are the top chemicals, the top synthetic preservatives that are included in many products that you really should stay away from. Nowadays, you hear all about organic and all natural and non toxic and as a lay person, what does all this mean, it is misleading, it is misrepresented. Most of these companies, they use really great organic raw materials and they use all natural materials and they use non-toxic materials but then what they do is they use a synthetic preservative system and they use synthetic fragrance.
Female: All right.
Shan: And that basically cancel out all the good that they were trying to do to begin with.
Female: Just negates it.
Shan: It negates it. So in our products, we use a sugar based preservative system which is natural. We do not use any chemicals that-- or any raw materials that have also been denatured. We use raw materials that are in their natural state in our products and we use therapeutic food grade essential oils to fragrance our products. So in essence, our products are pure enough to eat although they do not taste very good, so I do not recommend it but they are pure enough to eat.
Female: Right. On our website, we will list that that dirty dozen that you speak about and you know more information on all those ingredients.
Shan: Paraben free, these are some of the dirty dozen that are in products and if they are free of them, that is a much better product to use.
Female: So great to know.
Shan: So, do you want to go see what I have on the line?
Female: I would love to. Yes.
Shan: Okay let us go in the other room.
Female: In here?
Shan: Yes sure. So these are our sampling of some of the anti aging line. That is my premiere part of my line and my people have orange need.
Female: Yes. I would like to try that.
Shan: So, we have two types of mists. We have a rose jasmine moisturizing mist and we have a lavender toning mist which is for people that have oily skin which I have still.
Female: Okay. Because I use this little pads and maybe that is even better.
Shan: Those are nice to but it is good to hydrate your skin as well. And then we also have the cleansers here to the cleansers.
Female: So you have this product line and then you also have the “Mommy Baby”?
Shan: Yes, I have Mommy Baby line. In the Mommy Baby line, we have a body wash and shampoo so that it is two in one to make it easier for the mom.
Female: Right.
Shan: And we also have, it is called nip lip and eye and it is in funny product. My husband laughed when I came out with that title but it is for breastfeeding moms and this product can be used for all three areas.
Female: Also I think that similar skin.
Shan: And it is. We like three in one products. We do not like to use this product for this and that product for that. You want something easy especially if you are new mom. All these products do not have any fragrance added to them.
Female: That is wonderful.
Shan: A lot of people with allergies that have developed egsima, have developed rosesha over the years. When you are using products like this, not necessarily just my products but products that are without these types of toxins where heavily synthetic preservative systems, they do help your skin do its job. And it really does help with the allergies.
Female: They are able to say toxin free.
Shan: Yes. The three main things about our product line or they are pure ingredients, they are eco friendly and they are toxin free.
Female: Thank you so much for sharing this with you.
Shan: Thank you.
Female: And I do look forward to trying them, as a matter of fact maybe I will put some on my skin now.
Shan: Yes. Let us go play.
Female: Thank you. All right.
Male: So here is a few other facts that Shan shared with us. There are over 10,000 ingredients of personal care products and only 11% of the chemical ingredients that are in cosmetics are assessed for health for safety. Unfortunately, paying more does not necessarily keep you in a safer and it can be challenging to find a complete list of ingredients. A third of personal care products contain at least one chemical that has been link to cancer. Of course we will put the dirty dozen ingredients in the show notes for episode six on our website. I would tell you now but honestly, I cannot pronounce them.
Female: I want to thank Shan for introducing me to her skin care line and revealing some of the disturbing truths about the cosmetics we all take for granted. I will definitely think twice about what I put on my skin from now on. And of course we will have the dirty dozen cosmetic ingredients to watch out for listed in our show notes at greenbydesign.tv
