Female: Saving on energy cost while enjoying a well lead home is important to all of us. For many, the compact fluorescent bulb or CFL provides an eco friendly solution. Unfortunately the dimmable CFL bulbs in today’s marketplace have not performed up to customer expectations because there hasn’t been a dimmer specifically designed for CFL bulbs.
Rosie O’hara: I switched to dimmable CFLs to save energy but they don’t dim right and they tend to flicker.
Steve McCurdy: You know it has been over a 100 years since Thomas Edison gave us this incandescent light bulb. It has been the primary source of lighting in our homes. Standard dimmers that are on the market today, dim this light source but it’s really not the most efficient way we can do it today.
Now there are other types of light sources called compact fluorescents. Now this is a dimmable compact fluorescent and it does have a special circuit that is inside that does not work with the standard type dimmers that are on the market today.
Female: Common complaints include problems such as flickering lights when dimmed to lower levels. Not being able to turn the lights on when the dimmer is in a dim position and limited dimming range when using CFL bulbs with these dimmers.
Steve McCurdy: Leviton manufacturing has introduced a very innovative new product specifically designed for CFL dimming. It is called the Decora CFL Slide Dimmer. This unique product has a feature where it will detect whether you have an incandescent bulb in the circuit or whether you have a dimmable compact fluorescent bulb. Now it automatically will adjust for that dimmable compact fluorescent bulb and then it will do this for wide range of manufacturer’s bulbs.
