Hi I am David Epstein and welcome to Growing Wisdom and during the winter it can be rather bleak for gardeners of course we are working inside, trying to keep our house plants going and we are also looking through catalogues, thinking about next spring. But you can also replanting bulbs and there are certain bulbs that actually like to be planted inside and the ones that I am talking about are Amaryllis and Paperwhites.
Let me tell you about how to do these. The paperwhite bulbs take a little bit less time to come up generally depending on your indoor environment about three to five weeks and they will start to bloom. The Amaryllis can take six to as much as 12 weeks to come up depending on the particular variety of bulb.
You can take either of these bulbs and grow them in things like crushed stone, you can grow them in a regular soil, and you can even grow the bulbs in just water alone. So, how do you do these? Well, I am first going to take the paperwhite bulbs I am going to plant them inside of crushed stone. So we take our pot here and then we take the pot, and we take the bulb and we fill the pot up about three quarters the weight with the crushed stone. We placed the Amaryllis bulbs right on top of the crushed stone, the bottom of the bulb is the part the looks like it has dried up the roots. The top is the pointy part and then we fill up this container with the rest of the crushed stone to really secure the Amaryllis bulbs in there.
That is pretty much it. Believe it or not it is that easy. Then want you want to do is you want to add water and you want to add enough water, so that the bottoms of the bulbs are constantly in water but you do not want the water to come up beyond the crown of the bulb. Then the water will go into the bulb and rot it, so that is the important piece. Then you just placed this by bright window seal, they tend to like it cooler. So you do not want it in a very sunny, hot environment.
Now Amaryllis bulbs basically you plant them the same way. We are going to do this one in dirt. So here is a nice pot here, we have put piece of pebble at the bottom so that the dirt does not fall through, we put the dirt at the bottom and put the Amaryllis bulb in the pot, secure with rest of the dirt and I will keep this just moderately moist on the dry side. The Amaryllis bulb does not want to have a lot of water to it.
You can see this one that I did already. I started this a few weeks ago. It began to grow a little bit. It has got this nice green growth to it and eventually this will have this wonderful flower and wonderful color. I also like to take a stick and stick mine as the Amaryllis bulb grows, I will be able to secure that it does not flap over. So two wonderful bulbs that you can grow inside to enjoy a little bit of spring all winter long.
