Hi I am Dave Epstein, welcome to Growing Wisdom. Growing Wisdom here early in spring time when things are getting to bloom now of course everybody wants to rush in the spring and get some great flowers early on and we introduce you in the past to hamamelis witch-hazel which is wonderful because of blooms in February and in the March and after there is a few other things to begin to bloom of course a lot of people know about forsythia but I want it to introduce to cornus mas this is a small tree growing to about 15 feet high that particularly well in the variety of soils and that is an important point because many of you might have pores oil says you have heavy clay and your thinking I cannot get a tree to grow.
Well this little guy probably will do pretty well it is like full to part sunshine and it has this wonderful bright yellow blossoms early in spring time now this are going to come out very early in April perhaps late March depending on where you are, what zone comes out earlier of course for the south and later the further north you go.
The other thing I want you to notice about this little jam is the bark. We do not talk about bark often enough but the bark here has this great cantaloupe kind of texture it also has this wonderful copper color so you could picture this bare in the winter with the snow sitting on it. It is just a great contrast between the white and the cooper color so again this is cornus mas it is Cornelian cherry Doug wood it is just wonderful addition to any landscape to shape is also very nice as well. It can come in what we call a multi stamp form were you have many stamps coming out.
We have this particular one which is a single stamp form so it really looks like a small tree. So that is cornus mas. Come back every week for all of our tips and hints through out the growing season and all your long here at growingwisdom.com.
