Hi, I am Dave Epstein this is Growing Wisdom it is August calendar time and we are going to talk about some of the things you should be doing during the month of August. August still a good planting however if you are planting be sure that you are watering and that is my point number one if mother nature do not provide you enough water you definitely want to turn the hose on or turn the sprinkler on. However, if you got enough water and if you have your irrigation be sure to go shut it off because lot of your irrigation system just go on every week, twice a week, 7 AM, 4 AM so shot them down or you can get smart irrigation. There is a video about that to you could check that out and tell you a little bit about how you can save some water.
All right back to the calendar we go weeding is another important thing to do during the month of August those weeds are taking energy, they are taking moisture, they are taking light and you do not need them so get rid of them. Do a lot of weeding. If you have hollyhocks in the garden be sure to cut those back when they are done and disregard the tops that will help those very healthy as well. How about harvesting some of your vegetables, you know you want to harvest vegetables if you have them early in the morning. the sugar are tend to be a little bit higher early in the morning it is also a little bit cooler for you out there and always remember to harvest things young. Smaller zucchini, smaller heads of broccoli, smaller eggplants they tend just taste a little bit better. It is a good month to test the soil because in September, we are going to talk about re-planting some of the lawn, which has been damage and you want to know if you need any amendments as you go in to September.
Bring your Christmas cactus outside now put it on a shady spot then it will get subjected some of the cooler night which will becoming in another four to five week it needs those cooler nights for about 45 days or so to really bloom you will thank me for this before coming of fall. Also fall bulbs, speaking of fall order them out of the catalogs now you know some of the more popular bulbs actually runs out if you older now they are not going to ship it to you to early they will ship it to you when it is appropriate for your zone. Great idea to order the bulbs and also how about going to you pick you pick starts around many areas of the North East, the upper mid west anywhere that has some of those great vegetables. It is a great time to support you local farms weather you are picking pitches tomatoes plums, pairs or apples August is one when a lot of you pick do begin. And finally if your have crab grass in your lawn towards the end of the month the crab grass, thank goodness it is not annual so can reap it out throw it away and we will get ready to reseed in September.
So that is your garden calendar for the month of august will be doing another one in September as a matter of fact we put together a garden calendars for you every month. Lots of new video every week. We want you to come back to growing wisdom check out all of our material we are going to keep you growing all year long.
