I am David Epstein. This is Growing Wisdom and today I am going to talk you about Mahonia Aquifolium, great plant. Not as widely uses, perhaps it should be and why it is such a great plant. Well, it is evergreen. It is over my shoulder here. Stays green all winter hold it is fall age. It is get this wonderful yellow clamp of flowers in spring which smells fantastic.
And also in the winter this particular variety turns a nice red color so the fall age turns red. What so great about it is it does not get that big either so it is make so very foundation plan as you can see this particular plant is planted right up against the house. In some of the colder climate once you get into zone five it is probably marginally hardy, even in zone six you should probably be planted in the shelter location. It can get leaf burned during the winter from that winter sun hitting those leaves. You might want to use something like an anti-desiccant to help protect some of the moisture loss but it really is a terrific plant and it does make a wonderful foundation planning and it is very interesting here in the garden.
