Jennifer Matthews: When Allan Heldfong underwent heart surgery, he had more than just the typical tubes and lines to his body. He also had a headset over his ears.
Allan was hearing gentle spoken messages known as Guided Imagery, it's design to help in ways traditional medicine doesn't.
Gregory Fontana: We don't deal very well with anxiety, we don't deal very well with sleeplessness in the hospital, we don't deal very well with problems with the diet, and getting re-establishing patient who is not very hungry or nauseated.
Jennifer Matthews: So Doctor Gregory Fontana developed the Guided Imagery CDs that aim to help patients relax during the operation and recover after. The day after his surgery, Allan was given another CD to help speed the healing. He is just taking the additional help, was an easy choice.
Allan Heldfong: Going in for an anxiety producing experience which would cause a lot of stress, you can seem that anything that could alleviate this stress and anxiety would be, we are trying.
Jennifer Matthews: Cedar Sinai has tested Guided Imagery on 20 heart patients and notice the decrease in their request for pain killers and sleeping pills. 19 of the 20 patients gave the program high marks.
Gregory Fontana: And the only person who didn't like the experience was a musician who felt that background should have been classical music.
