You can get that to your guitar sage. Today, you’re going to learn how to play Elephant Gun by Beirut. I’m looking at my chart here on the screen, which I really don’t need so much with chart for this theme because it’s really simple, same chord progression to the whole thing. So I’m going to go ahead, jump in and start playing it and then we’re going to talk about the chords, the cord progression and all that. Its really not a lot probably it’s probably going to be the shortest lesson that we get. But it’s going to go something like this:
[Demonstration]
This is it for the whole theme Am, B, G, C, Em7/B. So let’s talk about the bits and pieces. Now first, before we start any of the techniques that I’m using here today, if you have any questions, go to yourguitarsage.com and purchase the e-book that I’ve got there will really help with all the techniques we’re talking about, strumming, chords, chord progression, how to the read the charts and knows what to think. You could be trying to get hold this chart, go to your guitarsage.com and you can check how to do that. So, I’m keep going at the first fret here. By the way, I love this song, it’s so simple but its just genius and the guy’s voice is amazing. So if you haven’t already check out, you wouldn’t be hear the if you did a little Beirut but I got to check these guys out more because this voice is just as insane. Okay, here we go. Tape 1, the first chord is an Am, all right:
[Demonstration]
Probably know your Am, if you don’t check out the E-book and that will show you how to play it:
[Demonstration]
That’s how to do it. That’s for one measure, six beats, this song is in six. So 1,2,3,4,5,6.. 1,2,3,4,5,6.. 1,2,3,4,5,6.. 1,2,3,4,5,6..that is a song of six, Am is got over 6 beats, D for 6 beats, G for 6 beats and then this split measure of C for 3 beats. Split measure is when we take two chords and split it amongst the measure. C for measure, Em7, that’s an Em7 just take your second finger and put it right there on the 2nd fret of the 5th string but bring your thumb over the sands that the low E there, we don’t want it. And so that would put a B on the base. So it’s Em7/B meaning Em7 chord but stick the B in the base not the E--

That’s the E—

That’s the B—

So this is a nice little:

We didn’t play it, it will sound like:

That still isn’t too bad but that’s not the idea in this song:

And the strumming rhythm here is you know its interpreted right we’re—it can basically the song of the entire song and bring it down to one rhythm here. So I’m going to go over this since we’ve got some time here. I want to go over this rhythm slowly here for you so you’ll get it. When practicing your rhythm, so it’s good to just take A chord or just take muted at strings then practice the rhythm if you’re having difficulty with the rhythm. You have your difficulty with your right hand rhythm and you’re adding all these chords its not going be very easy. So take something out and just concentrate on your right hand. So here’s the rhythm, its kind of go:
[Demonstration]
Okay so it’s like:
[Demonstration]
Something like a:
[Demonstration]
You did a 1,2,3 and—let’s see:
[Demonstration]
So 1, 2 and3 and 4, 5 and 6 and 1.. 1,2 and3 and 4, 5 and 6 and—someday you’re going to get that right away. Others of you might say how do you know when to do an upbeat or when to do a down or up strum and down strum? Your down strum should be on your numbers, so 1,2 and3 and—remember I’m saying 1,2 or three of 4,5 and six my hands are going down to ends are on the ups. It’s really important that you keep this momentum going with your right hand so that you’re at the right place at the right time with your strum. Don’t over think it—it’s actually fairly simple, you produce it slowly, I find it sometimes strumming on the neck, it’s a little bit easier for those of few that might have difficulty at first. So like --1,2 and3 and 4, 5 and 6 and 1.. 1, 2 and3 and 4, 5 and 6. You can get that then bring it down here, --1,2 and3 and 4, 5 and 6 and—then just pick up one chord to do it—
[Demonstration]
1, 2 and3 and 4, 5 and 6 and—then add another chord 1,2 and3 and 4, 5 and 6 and 1,2 and 3 and 4, 5 and 6 and---and then when you feel good about doing say doing two chords, do the whole chord progression.
[Demonstration]
You might feel good about doing it nice and slow chord progression good, rhythm all that up to speed:
