Hi. I am Bob from Toronto, Canada. This lesson is about proper picking methods.
First and most important, you need a proper pick, one like this, either heavy or medium. Try to avoid thin picks as there to floppy. Also, avoid using big floppy picks like this.
There design mainly for strumming. And also I always recommend use some sandpaper on your picks like that, I look at the guitar pick and edge and it will help grab on the string better when you pick.
What you want to do is practice up and down picking, like this.
[Demonstration]
Up and down, up and down, up and down like that. If you only pick down, you would not be able to get very much speed. It would be very tiring for your picking hand.
I will show you a demonstration. This is B playing riff if only down picking.
[Demonstration]
That is as fast as I could go with down picking. It is very tiring from my picking hand.
Now, this is up and down picking.
[Demonstration]
That was a lot faster and it did not hurt at all with my picking hand.
I will show you an exercise you can do to improve your up and down picking. Now the first string of the I fret, start one, two, three, four, then up one fret.
[Demonstration]
And up another fret,
[Demonstration]
Up another fret,
[Demonstration]
And so on.
[Demonstration]
All the time picking up and down, up and down, and then you move to the second string,
[Demonstration]
The third string,
[Demonstration]
The fourth string,
[Demonstration]
Fifth string,
[Demonstration]
And the sixth string,
[Demonstration]
All the while, picking up and down, up and down.
Start up slowly picking like,
[Demonstration]
Then work your way up to playing faster.
[Demonstration]
And so on and so on.
I hope this lesson has been helpful. If you have any questions, please message me. Good bye for now.
