Guitar Modes & Scales-One Pattern To Rule Them All

Hey everybody, this is Brian Helmick from betweenthelicks and today, I am going to teach you about how to basically take one pattern and use that one pattern to learn 84 different scales at the same time. Because you have 12 different keys and you get 7 different modes. 12 times 7 is 84 so, instantly, you can know how to play 84-different scales by just knowing one pattern. And this is really cool. I wish more people would teach this, but they do not, so I am going to teach you it today. What you need to know is a Major Scale pattern and that is it! 12 frets of that, you will learn up and down and everywhere and you have just learned 84 different scales. The cool thing is, and because this pattern, (Playing a Major Scale) Is movable! (Scale Demo) And it does not where it matter where you move it. (Scale Demo) Anywhere you move it, it is still a Major Scale, just depending on where you put it okay? That is the first step; you know those 12 different keys now. Now to learn those 7 different modes, built straight out of this; what is cool is that the fact that you Ionian or Major Scale, your Dorian, your Phrygian, your Lydian, Mixolygian, Aeolian and Locrian are all built straight out of the notes of that make up the Major Scale. And we will going to use the C Major as the example because, C Major Scale has all the standard notes, there’s no #’s or b’s, just go C-D-E-F-G-A-B and go back to C. So the cool thing is, using those notes, all you do is apply 7 different Modes. So C is for Ionian, D for Dorian, E for Phrygian, F for Lydian, G for Mixolygian, A for Aeolian and Aeolian is also just the minor scale, and then B for Locrian and you just played that same pattern but, you start on that note and that respect but, you are still using the same pattern. So, let me show this before you get a little too confuse. For C Major, (Scale Demo) Alright? D Dorian, same pattern but do not start on C, start on D, (Scale Demo) That is D Dorian, now you want to do E Phrygian Perce, use the same pattern, do not on C, do not start on D, start on E alright? (Scale Demo) You just learn how to play C Ionian, D Dorian, E Phrygian and you do the same thing for Lydian, Mixolygian, for Aeolian, for Locrian, it does not matter, they are all built straight out of that Major Scale. And that is what’s really cool and now that you know how to do those 7 Modes, you can move it anywhere and into any position and built it straight from that. So, the recap, one pattern, Major Scale Pattern, learn it for the entire fretboard alright? Know that, that pattern contains all 7 Modes, starting on each of the notes of the scale okay? So, now that you know those two things, you can move it anywhere, anywhere on the fretboard, slide it up on fret and now you are in a different key. You know how to play all those different 7 Modes from that key. So, really, it is kind of crazy to think about it, that is really that simple? But it is. Once you have learned to this, you kind of really get it, you can start applying the theory as to, you know, why the b3’s and b7’s sound great over the minor 7th chords? When all of those stuff comes later, after you already figure it out how simple really it is. So anyways, head over to the website.
