Welcome to guitarlessons.com. In this exercise, we’re going to focus on our right hand playing outside of the string picking and then playing inside of the string picking. Now, we’re just using an A-major pentatonic shape and all of this doing was playing the highest note on this shape right here
[Demonstration]
It starts right there on the highest note with your pinky, with an up stroke, and then on the same fret we reach across to the B-string and get that with a down stroke. Then go over to the 5th fret with your middle finger with an up stroke, then reach across to the B-string on the same fret with a down stroke. And that’s the pattern we’re going to follow out throughout the whole shape and you’ll see that I played just those first four notes for you again, watch my right hand
[Demonstration]
You get a consistent outside of the string picking for this pattern. So if we continue that pattern throughout the whole scale to over to the B-strings start on that, then start on the G-string, start on the D, and start on the A. We get a really good way to practice outside of the string picking and we just, other than just sitting here doing this.
[Demonstration]
We get to our apply to our lick using the songs, using in whatever context that you want.
[Demonstration]
And you can also switch it up. You can start instead with an upstroke, you can start at a down stroke and that automatically sets you up to play in-between the strings
[Demonstration]
So apply this lick to all your pentatonic scale shapes and it’s a great way to work on your inside and outside of the string picking other than just randomly picking two notes on two adjacent strings.
