Picking speed, picking things like that, the first thing you do when you want to do real fast stuff in your right hand. You make sure that your wrist is in the right position and your arm is in the right position because a technique is everything whenever you’re doing speed picking.
A lot of these hard players, a lot of newbies and stuff like that, when they start playing they’ll tend to do this kind of thing. Kind of keep their guitar or their hand away from the guitar as much as you can, I know you can see that. And basically try like arch over and like around to the strings.
You really don’t want to do that because it’s really clumsy, all the movement is in your whole arm and you can actually hurt yourself if you keep on moving your forearm. I’ll teach you the next point, whenever you’re going really fast speed picking stuff you want to make sure that whenever you’ve like--when I do it like you watch, let’s say about 90% of movement is all in my wrist. There’s really nothing going on back here in the forearms too much.
So, like I said if you keep it moving from your forearm like that you can actually hurt yourself, I was – actually got a pretty bad case tendonitis, learning how to speed pick because I would just sit there and do this. And you really don’t want to do that and like the only time that that’s really even applicable is if you’re strumming like a whole cord, but like – that’s really, you really don’t see too often just because it’s clumsy and it’s really doesn’t sound too great, especially when you have distortion on like I just did.
So remember to keep that in mind you know you definitely don’t want to like I guess and arch over the top the strings and keep on moving your wrist. Those are the two main things. For a beginner when you want to start doing this fast stuff, I know it helped me out when I first started to learn how to do it. It’s like finding like a nice spot on the guitar pit at my wrist. So you want to keep your arm pretty much against the guitar. You know don’t be afraid to touch your guitar that doesn’t have cuties.
So definitely like keep it fun nice and a little spot to pit it right there and I like to keep mine toward the bridge like as you can see it’s a metal player so where I can show you that kind of stuff. But I guess keep you’re wrist kind of pivoted file like a nice comfortable spot, I know I will just get it and do a controlled shake almost.
And there’s lot of different drills you can use, just like every other metal guitar player, I’ll recommend getting metallic Master Puppet’s Album, learn the whole thing through, another thing that will help you do a lot of down picking grills. Like I said Master Puppet’s Album is completely down thing just about every rhythm and whole albums is down pit.
And the better you can down pick and the cleaner you down pick, the better and faster and cleaner you can be whenever you start doing this ultimate picking stuff and speed picking things. So for drill you guys can try Mega Death song “Kill the King” which is basically just a drill. I don’t know if anybody has heard it basically just this.

So I mean it’s just you know one, two, three, four. One and then a two and you can start that slow and build up and I definitely recommend that just because the first four.
[Demonstration]
That’s all down pick and then as you go to the second part of the riff.
[Demonstration]
So it works on your ultimate picking, as well as you’re straight up down picking and you know just grab a metronome and practice that riff, you know, over and over again to speed it up gradually. The song really isn't actually that fast, but definitely give that a shot and I mean that should help you out. Like I said I’d also recommend you know, going out and buy the Master Puppet’s Album definitely like I said.
[Demonstration]
Fast you can down pick, the faster you know, you work on ultimate piece speed picking. And definitely you know, this is an awesome skill to have because if you just want to impress so much people you know all you got to do is this.
[Demonstration]
That looks like three notes right there, but since you know, you’re left hand is going really fast and so right hands is going really fast. And everybody thinks you’re really awesome and you really don’t have to. So but definitely you know like I said, now you can see like I post a couple more drills, but I’ll definitely start off with Mega Death Riff and just you know also, songs you’ve learned try down picking and just give it a shot. Don’t really worry about picking going up and down and just try down picking because if you can get that, you got a nice even and mechanical and smooth. Then you know the easier ultimate speed picking will come for you.
So keep it tuned here to freeandeasyguitar.com and there will be more lessons on the way.
