Gracias my little guitar sages. Today we’re going to learn “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood. Super easy song, check it out. Capo, if you don’t have a capo run then go get one right now. Turn this video off, go get a Capo and come back. You got to have a capo. It helps so much with songs like this. Helps you to transpose. Play the capo of the 2nd fret, the chords for this song and what we’re going to be looking up to my right here, I’ve got the chart up. The chords are Em, D, C, and there’s a B7 in there. Later on, there’s an Am and there’s a G in it too.
So it’s pretty much the easiest chords that you can play on the guitar and all opened. If you don’t know your open chords, you got to learn your open chords. All yours to it, got to learn.
And here we go and I want to start this all of, the basic chord progression and again I’m looking over to my right here. It’s got the chart. The basic chord progression is Em, D, C, B, and it goes again [Demonstration]. And for the most part that’s how the first goes, it’s Em, D, C, B7.
Let’s talk about a few things and before we get into the verse here. As we said, we capo it at the 2nd fret which means we’re a whole step up so if we were in the key of G or this case kind of in the key of Em basically what the key we’re in.
Well, so since we’ve got the capo up here, we transpose that as to the key of F#m for those of you that care. For those of you that don’t, swear about the open chords and capo of the 2nd fret. The beginning of the song, we also have two beats of pick up note.
[Demonstration]
And we’re starting to the song, so when you hear that the drum lick there just get ready to strum. Now, I advise you to work on these songs. If you’re a beginner, you start of with just the chord and count four beats for each chord so like
[Demonstration]
Now, you can always slow it down, just slow it down to your speed [Demonstration]
Students will say, “Erik, I have a hard time transitioning between chords.” Every great guitar player has, so welcome to the club. You’re doing just fine, just work that routine over and over again.
Verse so the intro is Em, D, C, D and then Em, D,C,D7. First is going to do that Em, D, C B7 take over and over again, three times to be exact. And the pre-chorus is Am, D7, chorus is a [Demonstration]. And then back to the intro or the what we call a turnaround which is kind of the intro repeated again.
So that’s going to do that a couple of times through. The bridge is a little bit different its going to go something like this and its going to go —[Demonstration] and then the turnaround again.
So those are the two basic parts of the song. If you need it sharp for this song, checkout your guitarstage.com and you can get and find out how to get the free copy of that chart.
All right, we’ll start about strumming for a minute here. Strumming there’s a lot of stuff going on in the song. And so usually what I try to do is try to refine everything to one specific type of beat. And then this you got the hi-hat doing like it to snare going and got that going on. Usually I take those two and combine them and that’s how I come up with my rhythm that I form songs and that’s how a lot of people do it, so like if you’re doing—[Demonstration]
You got the hi-hat and sort of thing there and then the heavier strum, will be your snare sound and then it’s also a swing of rhythm so instead of a straight—[Demonstration] and that’s call the swing. So practice that rhythm outside of the chord progression that we having a hard time with it.
I think that’s about it and on this one just kind of look over here and make sure. Yeah that’s it on this one, check out your guitarstage.com.
