Jennifer DiDonato: Hi everyone, welcome to MadeFitTv. I am Jennifer DiDonato, your host and this is episode number 33. MadeFitTv is everyone's source for health and fitness information and entertainment, so thanks so much for following us and for watching. Today' show is ten -- the top 10 things to not do at the gym. The reason why I thought this was pretty appropriate is because it's just running on January, now congratulations to all of you who joined the gym finally and who has actually stuck it out for this month, that's important. I know it's tough to do starting out, so you should pat yourself in the back because it's a hard thing to do. Now so congratulations for those of you who are just getting your gym memberships or if you are not in the gym, just starting out working out, it's a great thing to do, so keep it going, I know you can do it.
But if you are new to a gym or let's say that you have been at the gym for a long time and kind of forgot how things work, you know, you've been there for eight years and kind of getting comfortable, it's time to kind of check yourself a little bit, let's see if may be some of these things you may be doing that are offending other people, so I am just here to help, you know I am here on your side.
So starting out, top 10 things to not do at the gym. Number 10 is, don't make your friends do the same workout that you are doing. Now, if you don't working out with them for a long time, perfect, beautiful, you both get in cut, get in chicks, keep it up, but you know what, a lot of people who are just joining the gym you know, let's say, you've been a part of the gym for really long time and then you are just bringing your friend who wants to loose a significant amount of weight but they never picked up a weight before, don't be like, oh, yeah, we're going to do chest presses, we're going to super sit up, we are going to do some bosu, you know pikey things, you know, these people can be overwarmed and they may not be as conditioned as you. So try to take it easy and may be offer them or direct them in a position of someone who is knowledgeable but is also can keep up with their either slower pace or their beginner pace because you don't want to interrupt them and you don't want to scare them either.
Number 9; stop leering at all the chicks or the guy's, okay, you know, you are sitting there doing your biceps curls and just staring over at the chick over there, okay. Don't think that she doesn't see you, she sees you and it's a little creepy. If you want, just go and talk or something, I don't know, but just don't leer at people or if you like on the elliptical and just kind of staring off, you know, be conscious of that because if they see you more and more doing that, I mean, it makes people kind of uncomfortable and first you don't want to be known as like that creepy guy because who here is part of the gym and like just stopping thing for a second, who is that creepy guy in the gym, bingo, I bet, you'll sink your head right now like, oh my God there is only a guy at the gym that totally leers at people and has got his, don't be that person or that chick either I mean please stop, please stop, I am saving you here.
Number 8; don't wander the floor and just not workout and just check yourself out in the mirror. You know you got those people - tricep guys, come on no, no, no, we know what you're doing and the same thing for girls, you know, you got to check the hair. This isn't a beauty context, we are here to workout. It's fine if you want to check some of the counters or if your bicep is improving since last week, but I mean, don't just keep walking the floor and walking the floor and looking at yourself in a bunch of angles because we know what you're doing, you know I am not stupid. So just bear in mind.
Number 7; don't block people if they are in a spot in front of the mirror, okay. I know a lot of gyms, I don't why gyms do this, the gym that I am a member of, they recently had their free weights like I have mine off to the side, but now they place them right directly smacked out in front of the mirrors. But guess what, okay, If I am sitting in front of the mirror doing my overall presses or whatever, and some person comes up and they grab the weight that are in front of me, and I just stand and they start lifting and it's like but -- I wanted to watch myself, make sure my form is good so that's the whole reason why mirrors are there so you can check your form, make sure you're doing things right, so don't stand in front of people, be conscious of that, you don't want to be staring at someone's butt and Zubaz pants anyway, yeah, just don't be that person.
Number 6; countdown, grunting. If you have to grunt, either lower the way or find yourself spotter because I know that sometimes when you're pushing out the air, you should always exhale on exertion, I mean they totally, you know, that's just the way it works, they're supposed to and I totally stand by it. But adding in those, avoid just grunts, I mean, everyone make a little grunt, that's fine, but the screaming across the weight room, echoing off the walls, it's not attractive, it doesn't make people think like, wow! That person is awesome. It's just very annoying and it just kind of sounds -- sometimes it sounds like, gosh, this is a family gym here, we shouldn't be hearing those noises.
Number 5; put the weights back in the designated area. Typically, gyms have spots where you put those plate weights that you know racking on the smith bar or the dumbbells, they have little stickers that say, 5 pounds, 10 pounds, 20 pounds, just make sure you are putting them back where they are. You don't want to leave them around if you'll trip on and plus, you know, you're walking over to the rack and then you're thinking, oh, cool the 20s are available and you go and pick them up and they are 15s. So just make sure you're putting them back to where they are because it's the reason why it's like that. You also don't want to leave like you know 545 pound plates on the leg press on each side because someone might want to use it and they can't lift that weight, you don't want that inter yourselves, so just be conscious of that, alright.
Number 4; a towel or a water bottle is not equal a reserve sign. You cannot reserve machines by just throwing your towel there and walking away. Sometimes people will see a friendly like, hey, what's happened, just kind of set it down the walk over in the chat and they are chatting probably you know, 5, 10 minutes, if it's a busy time in the day, people need to get that machine and you know I think too is that, if someone takes your machine, you can't blame them, you know you really cant. You know, and especially even like an iPod or an Mp3 player, it's not a reserve sign if you -- find the spot you want and just stay there and get all your reps and your sets done and then move on, okay.
Number 3; don't work on two machines at once. If you want a super set, you know, may be just do a body weight exercise that doesn't require any equipment or just super set it with free weight. Super setting just means you are going from one exercise to another alternating, let's say you are doing a bench press and then you want to alternate doing leg press but you know that those are two really big machines that may be on the opposite sides of the gym so you know chances are just into the water bottle, towel thing, you can't really save it because you know everyone is paying the same amount of dues as you are and everyone deserves to be there just as much as you are and they want to go to workout. So if you want a super set or alternate, just grab some dumbbells, put them by your machine or just do a body weight exercise, working that in with the machine you are already on so one machine, okay.
Number 2; come on, we're getting closer, skip the cologne, skip it. It is almost worse than the all I am telling you, say girls or guys, okay. Who has been on a treadmill or at the stair claimer or you know, you just get your first setting of something and then someone comes up to you and sits right back, you know, sits down next to you, next to your machine and it's like, wow a tsunami of like aqua disease or just poo and it's like, oh God, you know it's almost worse than like someone is be harm, that's a think a sick or anything else, smell that either but I mean, it's just so strong and when you sweat, you know, your glands, the oil, the sweat, that is what makes the scents, like it isn't amplifier I mean and that's why, colognes and perfumes are made that way because they are supposed to release those scents when you sweat. Please don't use cologne, just shower and deodorant, okay. Yeah just don't be that guy, you know, you're thinking about how do you think about the leering guy, then there is the other guy, the guy who smells like yeah, yeah what's that? Yeah, let's so don't be that guy, okay.
Number 1; jumbo, I am sure you all know but this helps everybody, especially in the winter time, clean your machines before and after, because you can trust that the person that already used that machine cleaned it afterward, okay because I don't know, I always just clean up beforehand and also you got the buds, what going on and like clean that. If your gym doesn't provide that, you know maybe suggest something really because it's you know, honestly if your gym doesn't provide anything to clean machines and then they shouldn't be open, I mean, it's a violation of code, health code.
Yeah, disposable wipes, bring them with you, they sell like those not only like in a plastic, you know, big round tubes with even they sell like portable disposable ones. There are like 20 in there or just get like I know sounds funny like baby wipes, just do and just clean it afterward or even so bring your own towel and just put your towel down on everything you sit down and you know might be but you know what, I don't my bare back touching anything even if it is clean because I don't know, that can be like spit, water and then clean whatever.
