Hair Falling Out

Ryan: Hi! My name is Ryan McHolm (ph), I am 33 years old and I am from Massachusetts and while I have been taking a shower or while I have been showering, I have been noticing a lot of hair in the drain. I have been wondering what could be causing that?

Michelle Hanjani: Well, actually Ryan, noticing hair on the drain may not necessarily be abnormal. We have about hundred thousand hairs on our head and that any one time ten thousand of them are in what's known as the resting phase which we call Telogens. So that means up to ten thousand hairs maybe able to fall at any one time. Normally, in the average person about a hundred hairs fall a day. The most common place for those to fall is in a shower because you are gently washing your hair and you are gently tugging at the heir so that's where you are probably going to see them. If you are afraid that you maybe losing more than hundred hairs a day, sometimes I recommend actually collecting the hairs, even that sounds a little gross, I would recommend collecting the hairs over a week, counting them out and seeing if you're losing about 100 hairs a day that might reassure you if you are concern that the hair loss has increased.
