Kitty Kate: Hi! Everyone I am Kitty Kate and this is Sarah from Hoover High.
Sarah: And we are here from diet.com for a special Halloween segment on healthy treats. Most people associate Halloween with bags of candy but we are here to tell you that there are some healthy alternatives. Katrina today, has made a bunch of goodies that are festive and delicious but of course, good for you as well.
Kitty Kate: One way, to make healthy Pumpkin Spice Cookies is to replace apple sauce and you use Splenda franny sugar minuets and you just sprinkle it with some powdered sugar at the end. You can see the recipe on my blog, this week.
This is my favorite thing to make before holidays and it's just a layered cake. The layers are a low sugared doubles food chocolate co-oped with a little orange dye and sugar free, fat free chocolate pudding and then you keep layering it, and layering it and we just did a great sum at top so.
Sarah: Very festive.
Kitty Kate: And if you want to make it crunchy too at the top, you can break up chocolate cream crackers.
Sarah: A fun activity for children is making caramel apples. But are they healthy?
Kitty Kate: Yes, they are. You can get a lower sugar or a lower fat or both and combine it and if you heat it up a little longer, you can do a thinner layer of the caramel on the apple and we did crushed walnuts on top, and it's still a lot less than what usual candy apples will be. So, and they are still just as good. So --
Sarah: What makes the caramel apple the great choice for kids?
Kitty Kat: The apples one, have fiber and some vitamins and then you are also getting your fruit serving and then the nuts have fat and some protein in it. So --
Sarah: Healthy fats.
Kitty Kate: Yes, healthy fats. And so, it's a great choice for a snack for kids.
Sarah: If you are like me and don't like to bake, basically for Halloween I head to the drug store and pick up bags of candies for a little trick or treaters and the guests at my house. So, this year, I went and picked out the healthiest options. I bought raisin nuts for three of these bags, it is 200 calories. So, if you have one it is less than 100 obviously. I also bought peanut butter M&Ms for three bags, it is a 190 calories, and you get a whopping 4 grams of protein.
So surprisingly they are not that bad. You actually get a little bit of nutritional value and then peanut M&Ms are 180 for three bags and also have 2 grams of protein. So, these are my four picks for trick or treaters. Katrina you bought some other things for the trick or treaters?
Kitty Kate: Yup! I just bought an assortment of dark chocolates and some of them have either peanuts in them; regular dark chocolate or with rice crispies and they are great just because they satisfy your sweet tooth, a lot less sugar and have antioxidants so they are excellent.
Sarah: It's kind of surprising that they have this whole little package now, with all dark chocolate. I feel like every candy places coming out with dark chocolate, why is this?
Kitty Kate: It's just, it's come out with so many studies that it's a lot better for you because the antioxidants and it is the milk chocolate is just not as good.
Sarah: We hope you enjoyed our segment on healthy treats. So go and have a very happy Halloween.
