Happy New Year! Yup! It is New Year’s eve. Well by the time you see this, it is going to be New Years day but I am filming this early in the day on New Years eve because I am getting ready to go to a party. But this QuiltBlock I know, this is a separate special deal in the middle of the week, but I wanted to bring you a special QuiltBlock called Happy New Year. And this is a – what is it? It is a nine patch. And I am going to make this a 12 inch block. This is Penny Halgren from www.QuiltBlockLibrary.com. Thanks for joining me and I am ready to get started so I will meet you at the sewing machine.
Even though there are tons of patches in here, I am going to be doing some speed sewing because I am neat to get ready to go to my party tonight. So I have laid out — instead of laying out the entire block the way it is going to be sewn together, I have just laid out the patches because very many of them are the same. And so I am just going to chain stitch the triangles together and I am going to start with these really easy ones. These are half square triangles and I am just going to run all of these through my machine. Those little half-square triangles are still on my machine so I am just going to add on these triangles and I am going to sew them together like that, big one, two little one. And I will do that here and then do it the same thing going the other way.
Now I have got these two halves of this patch sewn together so all I am going to do is take these, put them right sides together, and then sew them together. I am going to make sure that my seam allowances are facing in opposite directions. And when I align this up, like quarter of an inch, it should match so that there is – the lines are straight. Now I have got this half of this center patch done because these are two rectangles. And it is time to repeat the process on this side sewing these triangles on to that, and these triangles on to there.
Now we have these triangles sewn together so we will put this together to complete this rectangle. When you are sewing these together, just remember you have got a lot of bias in here so do not stretch too much. Otherwise, your rectangles and then your patches are going to end up being misshaped and it is going to be hard to put the whole block together. Now we have got the two little rectangles finished and we need to sew all these little rectangles together. So just right sides together and stitch the seam. Now I have got these patches ready and I can lay them on my flannel board getting ready to sew the block together. The next thing I am going to do is work on these corner patches and for those, all I need to do is sew this half-squared triangles to a square. So I am just going to go ahead and do that with my entire pile of half square of triangles in the squares.
Now all I need to do is sew these two patches together, these two little units together in order to complete each one of these squares. So I am just going to put this right sides together and sew down. Now I have got the corner patches and they are laid out where they need to be. I have got the center ones and they are in their spots, and the last one, I need to sew together as the center patch. So I am just going to put these right sides together. And stitch down these two patches. These two little guys are sound together so I just need to fold them right sides together and stitch this. And then we are going to be ready to sew this entire block together.
Okay, we are all set and get all of the little patches sewn together. Time to take a quick pattern and make sure we have got this all put together right. And it looks like I do not. That needs to be moved, that needs to be moved and that is to be moved. Okay, proving that it is always a good idea to check your pattern with what you are going to sew together. Okay, now I am ready and I am just going to start by folding this two rows right sides together and chain stitching those patches together. Okay, I have got these patches sewn together and all I need to do is add the third one and I will do that, and then we are ready to sew the rows together.
Okay, I have the three patches in each rows sewn together and now I am just going to fold these top two rows together, and to sew them right sides together. And now the top two rows are sewn together I just need to sew the bottom one up, and then it will be party time! Our Happy New Year block is all finished and ready to go, and with all these purple, and yellow, and bright stars and the balls, it looks like a pretty Happy New Year party celebration.
Thank you for joining me, this is Penny Halgren from www.QuiltBlockLibrary.com, have a Happy New Year!
