Hardy Hibiscus
I always seem to be intrigued by the exotic nature of many tropical plants, like the tropical hibiscus. The only trouble with them, of course, is that they’ll only grow in the mildest parts of the country. In fact, they can be severely damaged if temperatures drop below freezing. But that’s not a problem with this hibiscus. This is the hardy hibiscus. It is a cold tolerant perennial that can grow in much of the northern part of the country. During the winter the hardy hibiscus dies completely to the ground and goes dormant. But since it’s such a vigorous grower, by summer, depending on the variety you choose, it can grow to heights from 4 to 8 feet. And if you think the plants can grow to a hefty size take a close look at the blooms. It is not uncommon for them to grow up to 12 inches across, about the size of a dinner plate. Let me give you an idea of just how fast these guys grow. This plant, which has already outgrown its one-gallon container, was planted from seed just this spring and here, at midsummer, it's already a giant. Now once you get them established in your garden they’ll make multiple trunks and the flowers just get larger and larger. To achieve this level of performance you'll want to give them full, hot sun and plenty of moisture. And as you might suspect, this aggressive grower is a heavy feeder. For continuous bloom you'll probably want to fertilize them several times through the growing season. I like to use a liquid fertilizer that has a higher phosphorus ratio. Too much nitrogen will cause them to produce lots of foliage and not much bloom. And after all, it is these big flowers we're after. From the garden, I'm Allen Smith. P. Bringing Color to the Late Summer Garden
Rose of sharon varieties - Dave introduces you to some of the many different varieties of Rose of Sharon.
When the summer heat rolls in and you are considering plants for those sunny locations it is important to choose once that can leave in the heat and continue to produce beautiful blooms like this. This is a Hibiscus and you might say it was born to take the heat this plants are Tropicals. Driving in places like Mexico and Hawaii so they are ideals for use splashes of color in those hot sunny locations like around the pool or an area that gets hot afternoon sun. To keep this plants full of blooms make sure you feed them regularly with a liquid all purpose fertilizer that every two weeks is recommended. Now bloom is all there to consider when choosing a Hibiscus this variety is very gated and it is foliage to me as his colorful and interesting as its bloom. Of course, all of these plants are Tropicals meaning they welcome the heat but they will de if the temperatures drop below 32-degrees. Now if you want a Hibiscus that you do not have to pamper through the cold months there are members of the family that are actually cold hardy. They can withstand freezing temperature, which is why they call them hardy Hibiscus. These plants are known for there huge blooms often 8 to 10 inches across. Now if you are looking for a Hibiscus that it is a rapid grower one that can grow up to 8 feet in a single growing season. You might want to get this one a try. It is simply called the confederate rose Hibiscus and since it is a perennial, it will return to your garden year after year. From the garden, I am Allan Smith.
