Health Dangers of Inhaling Helium
Dr. Travis Stork: Next group of young man, they think they're having a good time but they don’t know they are putting their lives in grave danger. And we have one of those boys on the phone right now. Jeremy welcome to the show.
Jeremy: Hey how is it going?
Dr. Travis Stork: Do you think inhaling Helium can be dangerous?
Dr. Travis Stork: I mean in the way that we are doing it no, it wasn’t really dangerous. We were inhaling it temporarily. It wasn’t something like we are constantly inhaling it, so in that situation no it was not dangerous.
Dr. Travis Stork: Well, I want everyone at home to look at this animation and why Jeremy is actually wrong, whenever you breathe in Helium of course the major concern is you're breathing in Helium not oxygen, very quickly without out that oxygen in your lungs to go into your blood stream your brain—you see there lighting up, your brain needs oxygen not Helium and you can die from that alone but Jeremy, the reason we have you on the phone is you may not notice but you can actually get bubbles from breathing in that Helium that goes into your arteries that goes to your brain can cause a stroke and you can actually get hemorrhage in your lung from one time use like you're doing there.
Jeremy: I wasn’t aware about that, but there are dangers and a lot of different things you do in life and we we’re out to just have a good time and make a funny video.
Dr. Travis Stork: What's fun about this?
Dr. Jim Sears: People don’t know how dangerous this can be.
Dr. Travis Stork: But Tony you do, what you say to Jeremy and any kid out there who’s you know again -- everyone is maybe inhale that a little bit of Helium from a balloon. But we’re talking about kind of extremes from a bottle, from -- what would you say to Jeremy?
Tony: I would say Jeremy you got lot of friends, a family that love you care about you, and there are other things that you can be doing, that are much less dangerous than what you are doing, I lost my 17 year old son just six weeks ago and if I can send it-- thank you-- If I can send the message out to young people, you don’t know what you're playing with and you need to take a good hard look at it and realize that there are other things you can be doing, yeah you're going to have fun, you're going to hang out with friends and do the things that kids do but this is not the safest way to spend your time.
Dr. Travis Stork: And I know there’s also a message you want for parents to hear?
Tony: Parents, if I can just help parents begin to connect more with their children look at their Facebook, look at their phone messages. Get to know the young people that they're spending time with and really connect with them because, 16-17 year old kids, don’t process things like our doctor shared, don’t process things and make priorities the way adults do. The things that are important to them are just having fun and hanging out, doing whatever is fun maybe a little trill now and then but they don’t realize as parents do that this can be dangerous and it can take their life.
Dr. Travis Stork: Well, our condolences to your thank you for sharing your message with all of us. And Jeremy I appreciate you coming on the show and at least talking about this. We hope that you’ll all of this into consideration in the future thanks for being here.
Jeremy: Well thank you.
Dr. Jim Sears: Hey Jeremy quick question, you're going to do this again?
Jeremy: No man that was the one time thing man.
Dr. Jim Sears: Good.
Dr. Drew Ordon: It’s good to hear
Dr. Jim Sears: Good.
Dr. Travis Stork: Good for you.
