Hi I am Joe Graedon. I write “The People’s Pharmacy” syndicated the newspaper column and host the radio show. Had you ever come down with the cold and walked in at the pharmacy, and just been overwhelmed with all the choices, so many products, so many ingredients what to pick? Well, the first thing you need to do actually is wash your hands, and the best way to do that is to wash your hands frequently during the cold season. Look for something that has some alcohol in it and kill those germs and viruses and then wash your hands all the time and do not put them in your nose or in your mouth. Next, look for something you can really suit your symptom, we have no cure for the common colds, it will go away in a week if you take everything in the pharmacy or to go away in 7 days if you take nothing at all, but pseudoephedrine can ease your symptoms, also sold under the brand names Sudafed, but you have to go behind the counter, ask the pharmacist for it. If you have high blood pressure or cataracts or prostate problem pseudoephedrine is not for you, now you can use some of the topical nasal sprays, they work quite well, but you can only use them for 3 days, otherwise can become addicted to them. Well, that else to do, you know I really like grandma’s old advice, Vit D, now she used cod liver oil taste terrible. You can take in under pill form it will work quite nicely, maybe add a little zinc to get that cod under control. Finally, something from China. They have been using it for centuries; you can find it in kan jang or TriMune, now I also like a little ginger, you can find it in a tonic you can make a ginger tea works nicely that ease stock congestion and of course do not forget mom’s best advice chicken soup, it will take away the problems in it taste great too.
