Katrina: Hi! Everyone I am Kitty Kat and this is Sarah from Hover High.
Sarah: And we are here from diet.com for a special Halloween segment on healthy drinks.
[Music-Playing]
Sarah: Most people associate Halloween with bags of candy but we are here to tell you that there are some healthy alternatives. Katrina today has made a bunch of goodies that are festive and delicious but of course good for you as well.
Katrina: One way to make healthy pumpkin-spiced cookies is to replace applesauce, and you spread or furnish the sugar being used and you just sprinkle it with some powdered sugar at the end. You can see the recipe on my blog this week. This is my favorite thing to make for holidays and it is just a layered cake. The layers are a low sugared devil’s food, chocolate cake, coated with a little orange dye and sugar free, fat free chocolate pudding and then you keep layering it, and layering it and then we just did a great summer top.
Sarah: Very festive.
Katrina: And if you want to make it crunchy too at the top, you can break up the chocolate green crackers.
Sarah: A fun activity for children is making caramel apples, but are they healthy?
Katrina: Yes they are. You can get a lower sugar or a lower fat or both and combine it. And if you heat it up a little longer, you can do a thinner layer of the caramel on the apple and we did crushed walnuts on top and it still a lot less than what your usual candy apples will be and they are still this good, so—
Sarah: What makes the caramel apple a great treats for kids?
Katrina: The apples, one, have fiber and some vitamin and then you are also getting your fruit serving and then the nuts have some protein on it.
Sarah: Healthy fats.
Katrina: Yes healthy fats and so it is a great choice for snacks for kids.
Sarah: If you are like me and do not like to bake basically for Halloween, I had to go to the drugstore and pick up bags of candies for our little trick or treaters and the guest at my house. So, this year, I went and picked out the healthiest options. I bought raisin nuts for three of these bags. It is 200 calories. So if you have one, it is less than a hundred obviously. And also I bought peanut butter, M&M’s for three bags. It is 190 calories and you go whooping four grams of protein. Another treat that I found that I think my trick or treaters will probably at my house if I give this out but you know they are healthy, well, just fruit snack. Makes fruit for three bags only a 130 calories.
Katrina: They are really good.
Sarah: And it is fat free delicious and they are made with real fruit. And then peanut M&M’s are 180 per three bags and also I have two grams of protein. So these are my four picks for trick or treaters. Katrina, you bought some other things for the trick or treaters.
Katrina: Yes, I just bought an assortment of dark chocolates and some of them have either peanuts in them, regular dark chocolate or with rice crispies. And they are great just because they satisfy your sweet taste, a lot less sugar so they are excellent.
Sarah: We hope you enjoyed our segment on healthy treats so go and have a very happy Halloween! Go, go girl.
