Martin Vanderwoude: According to Canada's Food Guide, we should be eating plenty of grain products each day. Five to twelve serving per person with an emphasis on wholegrain foods. The challenge we all face is how to incorporate those healthy wholegrains into our busy everyday lives? Professional Home Economist and Cookbook Author Emily Richards says it's not difficult. The first step is to choose the right foods.
Emily Richards: We need to pay attention to ingredient lists and nutrition labels when you are at grocer's store purchasing our wholegrains. Not all grains are the same. A grain is considered whole when it includes the bran, endosperm and germ. For example, if you see cracked wheat or bran on a product label, it doesn't necessarily give you the same benefits as a wholegrain, but it's definitely better than a refined product.
Martin Vanderwoude: The benefits of disease fighting phytochemicals and antioxidants are found in the wholegrain. Most are contained in the bran and germ. wholegrains have also been shown to be beneficial in controlling cholesterol, diabetes and weight gain, plus they are an excellent source of fiber and they are many tasty ways to include wholegrain products in your diet.
Emily Richards: wholegrains are nutty in flavor and texture, so why not try a pasta with grilled vegetables. It's really quick and easy. All you need is some wholegrain pasta, your favorite grilled vegetables and sprinkle it with cheese. It's delicious and it's an easy way to get wholegrains and vegetables into your diet. For maximum flavor and nutritional value, this dish can be made with a variety of wholegrain pastas, such as Catelli's multigrain, whole wheat and Flax of Omega 3.
Martin Vanderwoude: There are more tasty ways to include wholegrains in your meals and snacks. Have wholegrain breakfast cereal in the morning and use wholegrain breads for sandwiches.
