Now, Barb, what is hot yoga?
Barb Lease: Hot yoga is basically a yoga class in a heated studio. Here, we heat it to about a 105 degrees.
Meriel Bradley: So what does it do for your body? Why hot?
Barb Lease: One thing is, it detoxifies the body, so it releases toxic mineral build up. It also helps to limber the muscles. So, just at the end of a practice, you feel a little bit looser than at the beginning. We extenuate that by heating the studio, so the muscles begin to loosen up a little bit faster.
Meriel Bradley: I know that when you think yoga, you think very serious and focused which obviously has to be, is there a fun element to this as well?
Barb Lease: We do. We keep a very balanced. We welcome all varieties of people from backgrounds, various backgrounds. And whether you are a heavy sports person who wants to extenuate and benefit from their performance excellent point of view or whether they are just someone wanting to come in and try it. We welcome anyone to come. It’s lighthearted, but at the same time, you can be as focused or as sincere to your yoga practice as need be.
Meriel Bradley: Now, with that focus, the mind focus, is that something that you think goes into every aspect of our life, can you take it from into your everyday life?
Barb Lease: Absolutely. As we deepen our yoga practice, we start recognize things within our self, how we approach different poses in the class. And then we begin to relate that in our lives, how we react to people for instance. As well, it begins to lengthen our reaction timing to things. So, when an event occurs, really little more stage and can take a breath before we react. So, our reaction time increases.
Meriel Bradley: So, you benefit from many aspects of yoga?
Barb Lease: Absolutely.
Meriel Bradley: Now, what about weight loss, is it something that you could come in if you are—you know, you want to loss some weight and tone up, is it good for that?
Barb Lease: It’s a wonderful way to do it. We—with the heating in the room, you’re loosing water weight obviously. But with the yoga practices, we’re increasing our cardiovascular to the blood volume, and so, we begin to create out metabolism in a healthier way, which again will help in digestion and in weight loss.
Meriel Bradley: Well, what do I need when I come to a yoga class?
Barb Lease: You need an open mind.
Meriel Bradley: Okay.
Barb Lease: A matt, if you have one, but if not, don’t let that stop you. There are extra matts here. A towel and some water.
Meriel Bradley: And that’s it, I'm ready to go?
Barb Lease: You are ready to go, you’ll be guided through the class very carefully and to enjoy it.
Meriel Bradley: So, not something to be afraid of to come and try?
Barb Lease: Not at all. Do not let it intimidate you in any way. Sometimes people feel there is a mystique around yoga. Yoga is basically just a time for yourself becoming intimate with your own breathe and your movement.
Meriel Bradley: What about, you know, if you are a stay at home mom, can I come to classes during the day and is there something—somewhere I can put my children?
Barb Lease: That has been taken cared of as well. There’s Day Care offered for all of the morning classes. My own daughter comes to it and is very well looked after, has a wonderful time. Well, the parents can come in and spend time with themselves.
Meriel Bradley: Isn’t it expensive?
Barb Lease: Very reasonable. The cost here at the studio is quite a bit less than other studios and part of that is to again offer it to people who perhaps for whatever reason mentally, physically, or financially may feel intimidated to go to other places. They want to welcome people in to come and try it and experience the wonderful the benefits of it.
Meriel Bradley: And I know that I can try my first class for free, is that correct?
Barb Lease: Yes, that’s exactly right. Your first class is for free and there’s also variety of styles that are taught here so for people they come and try one style and then perhaps try another style to see which is appropriate for their body.
Meriel Bradley: Definitely something to try.
Barb Lease: Absolutely.
