Mij & Henry’s father, Buddy, has a new litter of pups.
Male: Hey everyone, today we are in Leitchfield Connecticut at White Flower Farm. I do not know if you ever heard a White Flower Farm but they are one of these most amazing garden places you can come to. They have an amazing catalog that I basically grew up with.
I use it not only to order things but it is like an encyclopedia of plants with really neat descriptions and really beautiful photos. And they give you really good ideas for how to pair things. You know instead of just showing a plant, they will say with these it will be good with this or if you could with this.
I just think that they are really; really neat, smart people and they were nice enough to let me come here today. Because they are having this thing called tomato mania. So, first of all I really, really like tomatoes and I love Heirloom even more.
So we came here today to interview the experts about tomatoes and also just to kind of look around this place because it is really amazing. You can either go to whiteflowerfarm.com or get their mail catalog which is really, really beautiful or come to their store, they have a neat store here and they have a bunch of events like this as well.
If you go to their website, you can see different events they have. They also have some videos on this site, which they are like Gardenfork check those out. I got a behind the scene tour of the greenhouses here. They are trial in different begonias, they trail in different clematises, and all sorts of stuff here which is just kind of really neat because you are seeing it before it hits the catalog, very, very exciting.
A big thanks you to Joyce Hemingson, and they have been very, very gracious in putting up with me. So, let us go talk to the tomato guys. I will show you a little of around this place, whiteflowerfarm.com. Go check it out.
So here we are, we are at White Flower Farm at tomato mania and Scott here is the tomato guru. He is from the West Coast but we are going to let that slide.
Scott: You left that girl.
Male: So what is an Heirloom tomato?
Scott: Well, an Heirloom tomato—there are lots of definitions, that was just an issue of question really well.
Male: No thank you.
Scott: But well yes exactly. But there are, there are several definitions and basically an Heirloom tomato is one that can be handed down from generation to generation. That means that it is true from seed. You grow it with this year, you save the seed, and you can grow it out next year and get the same thing.
That is what is different than on a hybrid, right because that does not happen necessarily with a hybrid plant. So a lot of people you will have I think it is generally considered that you know an Heirloom is 40 years old or older. We want to maybe grow a tomato that was started and we got from Russia.
That has been there for 200 years or something like that. So we love that part of the definition and again it is that it is true from seed that matters. Some tomatoes that were developed in the last five years are open pollinated which means that they will too be true from seeds.
So they qualify, they are just not—did not come over on a boat from Russia to have been around for 200 years. So that is a long way to answer there your question but it is all about whether that seed can truly be an Heirloom.
Male: So with a hybrid then, if you plant a seed from a hybrid fruit you are not necessarily going to get the same thing. Is there people could annoy and ask this, what is the best tomato to grow here?
Scott: A lot of people ask me and you know that I always say, okay which of your children do you like the best? What do you with that question? The last one I ate is always my favorite kind of thing. And I grow different ones every year and I grow a lot of them because obviously I am crazy about it. So I think there are different tomatoes that are best for different uses.
Male: Your favorite beefsteak then?
Scott: I think my favorite large tomato is probably the one called osi, it is on Australia.
Male: I never heard of that one.
