Jennifer Matthews: Allergy season can be tough on many. Joseph Striedl knows all about it.
Joseph Striedl: As early as I can remember, I always had some sort of allergy or whatever it would be to mold, mildew, grass, pollen, ragweed. You know, you name it, I think I had it.
Jennifer Matthews: For years, he had allergy shots. Each week he would rolled up his sleeve to get one.
Joseph Striedl: Sure, every week, every other week, every other month, monthly - it was pretty annoying after a while.
Jennifer Matthews:So annoying, he stopped getting the shots and instead put off with watery eyes or runny nose, sneezing and congestion. Then he found Doctor Peter Creticos, he is studying a DNA vaccine to determine if just six weeks of shots could be enough to relief a lifetime of allergies.
Doctor Peter Creticos: We have been able to demonstrate marked improvement and symptoms with six injections that's really comparable to what you'd have expected only after years of traditional shots.
Jennifer Matthews: The study shows six weeks of the DNA vaccine relief allergies for upto 80% of patients.
Doctor Peter Creticos: We think that with this type of approach, we may indeed be able to shut off the allergic response to important an allergen such as ragweed and indeed possibly shut off or "cure the disease".
Jennifer Matthews: Joseph has already notice an improvement and that makes springtime look and feel a whole lot better. This is Jennifer Matthews reporting.
