Hello. I’m Amy Stewart. And in this section, we’re going to talk about knowing what you want to grow in your container garden. Basically, there are a couple of key points here that I’d like to discuss. First of all, less is more.
A lot of beginning gardeners, myself included, long ago decided that I was going to have the biggest best garden I could ever have. The whole thing became entirely unmanageable. So there’s no shame in just growing what you can use and there is actually a lot of pleasure you’ll be getting from that. Secondly, figure out what you already used in your kitchen. If you know that you lived on pesto from basil in the summer time, if you know that you loved rosemary, if you know that you loved chives, go ahead and grow those things. And then, there is always next year if you need to grow something else.
Today, I’ve decided that we’re going to do an Italian garden because I use a lot of the Italian herbs, particularly in the summertime because they just taste so fresh and they’re wonderful and they love ample heat.
So the herbs that I’ve chosen are parsley, rosemary, oregano and basil, which are some of my favorites. And, we’re going to grow those in the ceramic pot that we’ve already prepared.
The last thing that I’ll stress you is something that I’ve already alluded to and that is that you want to make sure that your plants all kind of like about the same amount of light and about the same amount of moisture and you can find those things out by just researching them in a gardening book like a Rodale’s or something like that which is like a gardening expert. So you can look up each plant and find out, and I’ve already done the research on these to know that they’re all going to be really happy together. And that is how you select herbs for a container garden.
