Living with diabetes can be a daily challenge, but here is some technology designed to make controlling the disease a bit easier.
Diabetics know that regular blood testing can be hard on your fingers, but this gadget makes those days a thing of the past. Here is how it works. First, you load a disc containing 50 sterile lancets into the device.
Then you press these buttons to custom-set the exact depth needed to lance your finger. Unlike other lancing products, this one has an electronic system inside the device, that minimizes vibration and controls the lancet as it goes in and out of your finger. Let's give it a try. I could barely feel that and look, a drop of blood to test and my finger heals almost instantly. Called the Pelikan Sun, it sells for just under $200.
For many diabetics, mealtime isn't just a time to eat, it's also a time to take a shot of insulin. But keeping track of just how much you need can be a chore. That's where this insulin pen with memory comes in handy.
It looks like a writing pen but it comes with this digital display which allows you to record and review your last 16 insulin doses, about several days work. All it takes is a push of the button and up pops your information, dosage, date and time. You turn this knob to set your dose without wasting any insulin.
The HumaPen Memoir is available by prescription for about $45. It can be hard to monitor your blood sugar level on the go, but now your phone can do the work for you. This cell phone can test, record, even transmit your glucose level. You place a special test strip into a small opening on the side of the phone, just like that and then you place a drop of blood on the end of the strip. The phone displays your blood sugar level and sends the results to an online database that can be shared with your doctor.
The results can be automatically texted to another phone. See, here are the results of my latest blood sugar level in a text. All this allows your physician or a family member to monitor your blood sugar level and call you if needed. The GlucoPhone sells for about $100. As you can see technology is taking some of the pain and a lot of the hassle out of managing diabetes. I am Amanda Bergen with Tech Check.
