High-Tech Training For Surgeons

Jennifer Matthews: This is the future of surgical training. At Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, medical residents practice in this room with four of the most state-of-the-art surgery simulators around.

Edward Phillips: This is very interesting and exciting for the young students instead of just watching or spending all day watching, they can actually come here and do.

Jennifer Matthews: At station 1, residents learn the basics of one of the most common procedures, Laparoscopy surgery. At station 2, students practice placing breathing tube down on manekin's throat. The third station has residence practice a Colonoscopy on a manikin. They can remove polyps and diagnose cancer. It lets them know if the patient feels pain. They can work on 20 different patients' scenarios and even have access to medical history reports.

George Berci: We can ask the residents what is your opinion about the patient.

Jennifer Matthews: The last station allows students to actually perform a full Laparoscopic surgery. This resident is removing a gallbladder. Luckily these residents can beat that learning curve before heading into the operating room. This is Jennifer Matthews reporting.
