Hi! I am a 50 year old woman. I had a complete hysterectomy(ovaries are gone) April of 2007. My doctor put me on 2% testosterone cream to use every night for my libido a month later. My voice is deep and I have corse black hair on my face/belly/arms, as well as weight gain (especially in the abd. area). I finally got her to order a Testosterone level, and it is 480!!! She did a pelvis/abd CAT scan (checking for adrenal tumor), which are normal. I will have a repeat Testosterone blood test in a week. Do you have any other ideas as to why the testosterone is toxic? Could the cream cause this toxic level? Thank YOU, Colleen

Angela: Hello! My name is Angela, I am 20-years-old and I am from Blue Springs, Missouri, and I have higher testosterone than most women. I want to know more about ways I can lower it or just more about it in general? Dr. Adrian Dobs: Angela, all women have some testosterone and a lot of estrogen, just like men have a lot of testosterone and a little bit of estrogen. So with women, particularly young women who have a lot of testosterone, this can be good; it might increase libido and interest in sex. But if it's too high, it can be associated with side effects, such as increased hair growth. There are some conditions something called polycystic ovarian syndrome which particularly has high testosterone. And there are some therapies that are best for women who have high testosterone, one of which is the use of all contraceptive pills.
