Katrina: Hi! Everyone, welcome to the second part of our holiday survival guide. I am Katrina.
Sarah: And I am Sarah. And now, for our second part, we are going to be taking of our desserts. Christmas is often associated with cookies, pecan balls, sugar cookies, frosted cookies.
Katrina: Frosted. [Laughs]
Sarah: You name it, my mom bake them growing up and we just go to town. We love Christmas because that made my mom baking at least once a week. However, when you are young, you do not really care, you can eat whatever you want, you got a high metabolism. But now, if you have about three of those home made cookies, they will probably run you about 300 calories. What you may not now is that gingerbread cookies are your best of beat. For three, it is only about 100 calories.
Katrina: A lot of times at a party, nuts will be lunged around and the most popular is the sugar coated nuts.
Sarah: Candy.
Katrina: Candy nuts and your best option is to have just mixed nuts with no sugar on top. The ones with a sugar will make you feel hungrier sooner and the ones without will just not have as much sugar and will full you up faster. So that would be your best option.
Sarah: It will be more satisfying and you will not over eat later whereas at least from my experience, this candy nuts, I am not even hungry when I have one and then a handful later. You are still not hungry but you do not know that because your blood sugar is all mess up.
For dessert, if have an option between chocolates or candy canes, Christmas’ signature, opt for the candy canes, they are less calories, less fat, they are delicious and there is a recent study that said peppermint may surprise your appetite. Obviously not a whole lot but you are not really losing anything but trying right. So, Katrina what dessert does your family took up to eat during the holidays?
Katrina: We usually have pecan pie that can wrap up your calories to almost 600 or 700 and vanilla ice creams. So, this year, I told my mom to maybe go with if we have to have the pecans, go for lower calorie one or just have frozen yogurt with a few pecans on top but not caramelized or anything like that. And she agreed.
Sarah: So, when you are out at holiday parties, assess every dessert option and make the best choice. We will see you next time when we go over our favorite holiday drinks that will not pack on pounds.
