Extension chords can be a handy, temporary way to place electrical products wherever you like. But if misused, extension chords can be dangerous. It is estimated that about 4700 residential fires originate from extension chord each year.
The Electrical Safety Foundation International recommends taking the following precautions to ensure there are safe used. Examine the chord to make sure that it is not cracked, freight, cut or damage. When using extension chords outdoors, make sure they are marked for outdoor use and be sure to plug them into a GFCI protected outlet.
When unplugging courted products, use the gripping area, yanking or tugging on the chord could damage the wires and insulation. Never run extension chords across walkways or under rags.
The extension chords are intended for temporary use only. Use them sparingly and do not overload them.
