Putting up holiday decorations is an annual tradition. But for safety sake, the Electrical Safety Foundation International recommends taking down all decorations during the first week of January. According to the US Consumer Products Safety Commission, an average of 5000 people visits the emergency room each holiday season due to electrical decoration mishaps.
ESFI has some suggestion for wrapping up after the holidays. Do not yank or tag on courted products. When unplugging, use the gripping area to carefully remove them from an outlet. Carefully inspect each electrical holiday decoration and extension chord. If you see crack or freight plugs or any other evidence of damage, throw them away.
When storing decorations, make sure you place them somewhere away from children, pets and water. Holiday decorations are for temporary use. If decorations are properly cared for and stores correctly, they will last for years to come.
