Someone ask if I could come up with a pattern for making these hollow cubes. And the answer yes, and I have come up with some templates that you can use to make this cube and they’re look like this. If you actually look at the picture, now that I’ve got these kind of separated there are six of these that are exactly the same. The difference is in the colors that you put where you put them and then how you sew them together to make the cube. So you can use the templates or you can use a rotary cutting template to accomplish the same purpose. And this rotary cutting template that I use to cut those patches out.
Let’s say 60 degree triangle and it’s got all kinds of measurements on them so that you can tell how big the triangle that you’re going to have. And in addition to that, you’ve got your quarter of same allowance that’s measured on the outside. So basically, what you’re going to do is take your fabric and I got this double layered because if you look there are two of each color of the center triangles. So you got two light ones and two dark ones and two mediums. So I’m going to cut those bigger triangles out first. And I’m just going to cut the cell of each off which is going to give my spread on my sheet on the fabric. The insides of mine are three inches so I want to make three and a half inches. So I find the three inch marker here which is this line and then half an inch beyond that. And I line the three and as half inch line marker up to the bottom of my fabric here. And then I just cut it out using my rotary cutter.
And now, I have a triangle so I’ve got my two medium relatively medium fabrics for my cube. So I’m going to put that aside and cut all of the center triangles cell. Now I got my center triangles cut out and I got a laid out according to the design here with my light ones, mediums ones and dark ones. And then what I need to do is cut the strips that are go on the outside. And I’ve got a couple of choices, one is I can cut them exactly so that they’ll match up. That would be cutting these shapes, trapezoids, I guess is what they are. This is the finish size so I would need to cut that and see the allowances on it. The other way I can do it is to cut strips of fabric, so the strip on and then use my triangle to cut that edge off once the side is on. And that to me is kind of easier way of doing it.
Because this is light fabric, I’m going to sewing it on to this bottom locks edges. And so one dark triangle and one medium triangle, so I’m just going to take these over to my sewing machine. I have one inch strip here that’s cut and I’m just going to sew this on the strip and then I’ll bring it back to my cutting table and cut the triangles out. And so that I can sew the next strip on.
Now I got this sewn on, all I need to is open it up. Put my triangle template on top and trim this bottom strip off. So that it continues to make a triangle. And I’ll be doing the same thing on this triangle. Which I want to watch here is just to make sure that you got these triangles spaced far enough so that you can cut this off and maintain your shape. Now I need to sew the second sides on. So I’ll place this on this strip and sew those on. Now I got these two sewn together and I just need to trim this up on two sides. Because these are equilateral triangles, I can do that—I can just turn my shape around so that the tip is already in a place that’s been cut off. And then all I have to do is trim the sides through the ends. Down here, that makes it really easy.
Now, making sure that these are all in the right place is the most critical thing, because if these aren’t lined up right, your box isn’t going to look right. So you’ve got the light one up here with the medium around the outside. We got light with dark and then you got medium with dark. And then over here, you got dark with medium, dark with light. So the first thing, I’m going to do is sew each side together, you can see that I’m going to be able to get a straight scene once I have these three sewn together and these three sewn together.
Now I got the two halves on together, all I need to do is sew this down the center. The 3D hollow cube is now finished. And all I need to do is press it and make more and sew them together. The thing that I like about using this template is that you can change the size of the block without drawing new template pattern pieces. You can just use the triangle to cut your fabric and trim the pieces around the outside to whatever sides you want.
So there’s the 3D hollow cube.
