Home On the Range arr.by Troy Brenningmeyer.
[Demonstration]
Hi I’m Troy Brenningmeyer. Welcome to Lessons with Troy.com. We start my
arrangement of the classic tune home on the range it’s what we’re going to do today in
the key of G kind of in a bluezy style so if you’re ready go and print out your tab and set
it on the stand in front of you and I’ve also included if you bought the lesson in a couple
of MP3 jam tracks which you can practice along to when you’re not watching the video.
Okay let’s go and get started here with the first phrase.
Okay here’s going to be measures 1, 2, 3, 4 and part of measure 5. Number these tunes in
3 or 4 times we’re going to have a pick up in the measure two there and measure one
we’re going to start on beat 3 so I’ll count 1, 2, 3, 1, 2 and then we’ll play on beat 3 there.
Here we go 1, 2, 3, 1, 2…
[Demonstration]
1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3...
[Demonstration]
Okay this phrase is real neat because as you can see there we’re going to do a nice
forward slant to get a Cm sound there in measure 5. Let me show you exactly what I’m
doing. There on beat 3 measure 1 you’re basically just sliding…
[Demonstration]
From four down to two-point off to 0 and that’s all in your 4th string just like that. I got
my bar tilted up and just pull straight back to get that pull off and then the measure 2 I
pull this right I’m just doing a pinch on my 6th string and 4th string. I’m playing an open
3rd string after open 6th string and the 2nd fret of my 3rd string just like that…
[Demonstration]
And measure 3 I’m going to slide up from 2 to fret 4 there on my 3rd string playing an
open 6th string open 4th string just like that…
[Demonstration]
Okay then you play an open 1st string open 6th string then you’re going to do this…
[Demonstration]
It’s a real quick hammer-on pull off on your 3rd string 02 to 0…
[Demonstration]
Then you play your 3rd fret 4th string.
[Demonstration]
Just like that.
[Demonstration]
That’s measure 3…
[Demonstration]
Then on measure 4 you’re just going to slide up from fret 3 to fret 5 on your 5th string and
then play fret 5 on your 1st string back to fret 5 on your 5th string and then back to fret 5
on your 3rd string. Okay so far starting on measure 1 we got this…
[Demonstration]
Okay now we’re ready for that slant to give us that Cm sound and we just do that.
Basically I’m doing a forward slant there on my 4th fret 5th string and 5th fret 3rd string so
this is my CM because I’m playing an E natural and then a C, okay that’s the major 3rd of
our chord and the root of our chord of the C chord right but if you get that Cm sound I’m
going to flat that 3rd and you can do that and still play that root if you slant your bar just
like that I’m giving you a nice little minor sound so basically what I’m doing is I’m
sliding in to that from the fret behind so I’m gong to slide in to my 4th fret, slide in to my
5th fret 3rd string, 4th fret 5th string.
So you really got to use your ear on that to make sure you know you don’t over slant or
under slant that.
[Demonstration]
Just like that. Okay so the full phrase starting on beat 3 is 1, 2,…
[Demonstration]
Just like that play it again. 1,2…
[Demonstration]
Okay let me show you what I’m doing with my right hand. Okay here’s what my right
hand looks like for measures 1, 2, 3, 4, and part of measure 5 start off with my index
finger there on measure one and do that pinch with my thumb and index, middle, middle.
[Demonstration]
One more time…
[Demonstration]
Just like that 1, 2, 3, 1, 2…
[Demonstration]
So that’s what’s going on with the right hands start up with your index. Thumb and
index, middle, thumb. Just like that. Okay let’s move on to the next phrase.
