Hi, my name is Mark Donovan from HomeAdditionPlus.com and today, we I am going to talk a little about circulator pumps and how they work.
The circulator pump works in conjunction with the zone valves, the boiler system and the thermo stats to provide heat to the house. When the thermo stats indicates that heat is needed to a room, it sends a low voltage signal to both the zone valves and the circulator pump to begin sending hot water from the boiler to the heating elements. When the water is cool, from the heating elements, it comes back to the boiler, it is re-heated and the circulator pump re-circulates the hot water again back up to the heating system.
Circulator pumps are also used in domestic hot water systems to provide on demand hot water to showers and faucets, et cetera. It is very useful for saving water. However, it is very energy inefficient. Hydraulic circulator pumps typically will fill over time and when they do, there is a couple of things that you should be aware of when replacing one.
1. You want to look at the flow performance. And this is a metric or set of performance measurements that determine the power of the motor. Besides, horsepower, you want to look for whether or not it is capable of how much vertical it will lift. Typically, for a two or three storey home, you want to make sure that efficiently, it has to get hot water up to the third floor. And, particularly when you are in a basement.
2. The amount of water that can flow per minute through the circulating pump. You want to make sure there is efficient water that can flow through to support the zones that you have in your system.
