Hello everybody and welcome Wine Library TV. I am your host Gary Vaynerchuck and this my friends is the thunder show, a.k.a the internet, most passionate wine program and we’re at the W Hotel in San Diego and I was about leave.
It’s kind of early in the morning to drink a little Vino but I was like, wait a minute, hotel episodes, we are still on a quest to find great, I mean great wine in hotels. And now the double you dazzled, nice little job here. They have this little, little boost pack in the hotel room but look what they did over here. I don’t know if this is a global W move but they’re really get the wine put, well I didn’t mean realized, there’s actually a bottle of wine here too. Look and see how much is 32 bucks. There’s a bottle of wine here, I didn’t even see that 2 seconds ago and a bottle of wine here. So two options for the W big ups for them in the mini bar and cork screw, good and glasses. You know what? There are two of them so let’s spend a little money here.
Let me see what I should do here, put this here, so what we’re going to do is open both wines and taste them. We’ve got the Francis Coppola 2006 Diamond Merlot, here little half bottle wine. It’s widely available but probably not there’s vintage anymore. I think most of stores in public hiring in ’07 Merlot in the regular sized bottle. Made them wrong which is I kind of guessing, there’s no way to sort of to pop. Now let’s keep in mind that both wines did have enough time to breathe so let’s keep that in mind when we taste it. And second of all, a very interesting wine here, I never had this before. Root 1 Cabernet from Chile.
This is a really interesting producer here, very new wave package, 32 dollars. Couple this wine with selected cheeses and more; give in room dining a call. Very nice job by the W, I like the marketing. Alright, so what’s going on here? So I’m paying 30 dollars, this is probably a seven to nine dollar retail wine unless the dub is really come through with the mark up this days. I’m just hoping everybody’s doing well and I hope you enjoy this hotel episode. They’ve been a lot fun with the flip cam. Alright, now we’ve got both wines here, the Merlot Coppola and the Root 1 Cabernet. The probably range in the same price range, you know, pour, that’s the Coppola and let’s pour the Root 1, very nice, Cabernet Sauvignon. All right, back into this little mirror thing, so Coppola 2006 Merlot.
Let’s see what’s going on here. Let’s give it a snippy sniff, now, you know some really nice black cranberry coming through right off the bat. I kind of like it, little sink. So little black current coming through on the wine, little bit of a, let’s see if I put these lights on. Little bit of oakeyness coming through. I forget, little bit of an oakeyness through on the nose as well but a little black cherry as well. Not too bad for Merlot. Let’s give it a whirl. Little oaktified but not so bad, I was thinking the oak monster was coming through and then a little something kind of come down. A little fakey fruit action but on the flip side, it’s kind of juicy.
A little bit more of a complexity than I thought it would have. Let me get one more shot. Not my total cup of tea kind of fake over oaked flavors. A little more balanced than I’m may be would have expected but at the end of the day, it really taste like 10 dollar Merlot, 7 dollar Merlot if you like have tried Bogle Merlot for 8 dollars for example and get the same kind of thing going on. 82, 83 point wine, nothing super special and I’d probably give it a pass. Let’s move on. Great, let’s wash my hand. Here we go and now we have the Root 1 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon.
This is a 32 dollars by the bottle here at the W, probably again a 10 dollar or so wine. Let’s give it a sniffy sniff. Very interesting because these flavors, very obvious, very bright cassis needs a little bit of like a rose petal component, good nose, I like it. Let’s give I a whirl. So I’ve killed the sink. Very bright fruit, I’ve almost, wow, I almost get dried apricots on the mid-palette which is very unusual for a Cabernet and very much to my enjoyment, good polish, little cream vanilla mocha play on the back end. It feels like I kind of bit a Starbuck’s store but I kind of like it. It’s a little over oaked, it may be my palette’s probably primed from the Merlot before so when you’re drinking a lot of Oak wines you start to kind of getting used to it. It is heavy on the oak, now I don’t know which glass is this.
This is, come on; I do not know which glass is which so I’m just going to go grab this. I want to keep it, I probably little a bit of figured it out but, yes this is it, actually that wasn’t so hard. Anyway, just drink it out of the bottle to make sure. Good firm tannins, I tell you what, this little Root 1 is not that awful. I like the dark cherry, I like the mocha play, I like the overall fruit, I like the complexity. This is an 87-88 point wine to me and probably again, a 7 to 12 dollars retail wine in normal stores and restaurants. I think it’s a pretty good buy to be honest with you. I think it delivers tannins, mocha; it is a little over oaked?
It is but that never hurt anybody and a nice salad wine. Would I pay 32 bucks for it? No way but if I was in a hotel, may be on a date, it’s kind of nice that W creates this little sanctuary and it’s not so different than what I was talking about the other day, creating a thunder list in hotels. But 4, 5 bottles of like 7 to 12 dollars, Portuguese wines, South West French wines may be a half bottle will be something awesome, now that would kill. But the W definitely leaps in the right direction. I had a great time at my W San Diego event. Thank you for the hundreds of you that turned out for the live tapings and most of all, I miss you Vaniacs, still on the road, coming home. And now the question of the day, we’ve pretty asked the best wine you’ve had in a hotel, how about the best meal you’ve ever had in a hotel? Unless you get serious, there’s a lot of world class restaurants in hotels if you want to go on that technicality or you may be want to talk about room service.
I miss you! I love you! And you with a little bit of me, we are changing the wine world.
