How Adult Circumcision Is Performed
Dr. Travis Stork: So we have an email from Bobby and he writes. I’m 18 years old and thinking about getting circumcised. Are there any risks for someone my age wanting to undergo this procedure? And how long does it take to recover from a minor surgery such as this.
Dr. Jim Sears: Hey Bobby that’s actually a very good question. In babies it’s really easy I do this in my office, it takes 15 minutes they’re done but for adults it’s a little more complicated because there are stitches involved the things like that. So let me just kind of show you this Drew, come here Drew. So Bobby you were born like that with a little extra foreskin at the end. So what the doctor will do, he’ll numb it up first. So you won’t feel any of this then he draws off the excess then he’s going to put a clamp on it and his will be a more official looking…
Dr. Drew Ordon: And all this is to.
Dr. Jim Sears: than these chopsticks but and then we’ll just cut along the outside of the clamp protecting and then — nice and pretty looking.
Dr. Drew Ordon: Well Jim you know this is something that I do in adults and it is a little more complicated and I know both of you do circumcision in the new born.
Dr. Jim Sears: Because you put stitches around the skin edge there in the adults.
Dr. Drew Ordon: And as an adult you have to be very careful how much skin you’re removing because you can get too much as removed that you can get stenosis kind of thing.
Dr. Jim Sears: That’s no fun.
Dr. Drew Ordon: And the whole sensation thing is too.
Dr. Jim Sears: The recovery is generally about four weeks. The benefits certainly there’s a slightly reduced risk of penile cancer which is very rare risk for that anyways. Lower development of STD’s which is pretty important but you still got a use your condoms, and use safe sex because it certainly doesn’t prevent STD’s by any means.
The risks, are there any risk? Sure, with any procedure there’s risk of infection, inflammation. Increase risks of erectile dysfunction that’s maybe a little theoretical because you’re going to take that nice moist head of your penis and now that it’s exposed all time it’s going to dry out loose a little bit of sensitivity. Some men do report that, some men don’t. So let’s —
Dr. Drew Ordon: Like any procedure, bleeding, scaring, infection are all potential complications.
