How Alzheimer, Cognitive Impairment and Dementia Differ Daemon: Hi my name is Daemon from Los Angeles, California and my question is -what are the difference between Alzheimer’s, cognitive impairment and dementia? Are they the same or are they possibly related? Elkhonon Goldberg: Daemon they are related. Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia. Alzheimer’s is a name of a specific disorder where the term dementia refers to a whole family of disorders which includes Alzheimer’s but it is not limited to them. Now cognitive impairment is an even broader term of which refers to any change in cognition which is outside of the boundaries of the normal. Cognitive impairment maybe a result of head injury and result of viral diseases of the brain, the result of a stroke and result of many disorders in addition to dementia. But cognitive impairment certainly is what the heart of dementing condition also.
