How Art History Classes Inform Graphic Arts Education
Erik Michielsen: What motivated you to integrate art history and marketing focuses into
your bachelor fine arts course work in graphic arts?
Lulu Chen: Well I think should be well rounded. So whatever your particular interest
is I think it’s still important to learn about things that will support the
interest. All throughout history is a narrative of what happened during
those times. For example, at the time Degas when he painted the
ballerinas backstage in Paris, now we view it as a beautiful work and it
was come claims into backstage maybe a show. But at the time, there was
some vulgarity to it because there should have been a man of his society
standing being backstage while ballerinas are practicing or getting
dressed. And when you look at art, history plays a huge role because a lot
of times they’re narratives of the time period that they were produced.
